Mets Fans- Concerned About Santana Yet?
I am starting to get there...I'm hoping that we did not waste the last 2 years of this man's prime.Tags: None -
Re: Mets Fans- Concerned About Santana Yet?
I'm surprised no one has answered this thread. I think it's safe to say that Santana's best years are behind him. He's still a damn good pitcher though he's going through a huge transition. He's tipping off his fastball and changeup with his hand positioning which is making it easier on hitters to tee off on him. He's also doing something he never used to do before in consistently missing his location as well.
If he can correct some of these problems he'll still be a good front of the rotation starter but no longer an ace and definitely no longer one of the premier pitchers in MLB.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

Not totally concerned yet. But I think the Mets need to trade for a guy like Cliff Lee. The way Johan is pitching, we will a dominant starter.MLB: New York Mets

What bats do the Mets have to trade for Lee? Seattle is good to go on pitching, they just need bats.Comment

Re: Mets Fans- Concerned About Santana Yet?
Without those three in a deal, the Mets potentially could offer Seattle a package built around such prospects as Ruben Tejada, Fernando Martinez, 18-year-old shortstop Wilmer Flores, 20-year-old righty Jeurys Familia, and Triple-A catcher Josh Thole.Mets/Giants/Knicks/Rangers/Manchester United/Notre Dame Football

I have no worries about Santana, but we have seen the last of the prime Santana. He'll still be a good pitcher but no where near type of pitcher he was with the Twins/ early Met career.Mets/Giants/Knicks/Rangers/Manchester United/Notre Dame Football

The two favorites for Lee are the Twins and Mets, mostly likely with the Twins having the upper hand since they have Wilson Ramos and the Mariners apparently want a catcher.
Ruben Tejeda is hitting .290 in 190 ABs w/ only 1 HR and 1 SB; caught twice. Maybe he is a good defender? SEA has that already in Wilson.
Flores is young, and has shown some pop. Good be a decent prospect.
Familia was 10-6 in low A, but is struggling in high-A through 11 starts w/ a 6.16 ERA.
Thole is hitting .267 in AAA w/ 2 HRs. Looks to have good plate discipline.
If this is the package the Mets are offereing I'd definitely pass. Esp. given the deal that they gave Minny for Johan. I think Texas can offer up a nice package, and I think Lee maybe headed there.Originally posted by Edmund BurkeAll that is needed for the triumph of evil, is for good men to do nothing.Comment

Don't get emotional. Instead of making snide comments maybe you could offer up some explanation of why these guys would be considered enough for Lee. None of those guys are showing anything except for maybe Flores, and that's not enough to nab Lee.Originally posted by Edmund BurkeAll that is needed for the triumph of evil, is for good men to do nothing.Comment

Re: Mets Fans- Concerned About Santana Yet?
Yeah, I agree. If Bavasi were still in charge, the Mets would have no problem getting Lee but now that the Mariners have a GM that can actually tie his own shoes, I highly doubt they would give up Lee for that package.Comment

Re: Mets Fans- Concerned About Santana Yet?
Im willing to give Santana the benefit of the doubt for a while..to figure this out.
Its clear that he can rely on challenging hitters with the fastball-changup combo anymore..not when you are topping out at 90..as opposed to 92 and 94 on ocassion.
That Santana, I think, is dead.
He has the talent and the makeup to make the transition to a guy who will need to paint the corners with the fastball now.Comment

Re: Mets Fans- Concerned About Santana Yet?
Why would anyone be concerned? It's been well known for quite some time that he has a damaged arm due to poor mechanics.
The Mets are paying him for what he did in Minnesota. Anything they get from him today is just extra cake.
Anyone who gets upset when he pitches poorly should learn how baseball works.Comment

Re: Mets Fans- Concerned About Santana Yet?
Not getting emontional at all. Lee isnt going to draw much of any prospects because he will not sign right away. Its not worth selling the farm for a summer rental. So really its up to the Marniers if they want border line prospects now or 2 draft picks when he leaves in FA.

Look at last years trade deadline, the Cardinals dealt their top hitting prospect to Oakland for Matt Holliday, no one knew if he would resign with them or not, worked out that he did but he could've just as easily left in free agency.
Saying Lee won't fetch a good return because he will be a FA is wrong, he would bring a better return if he had another year on his contract sure but the Mariner's will definitely get a nice return should they move him.Favorite Teams:

Teams trade highly regarded prospects all the time for rentals, sometimes it works out sometimes it doesn't.

MIL moved Matt LaPorta for half a season of CC too, AND Manny netted BOS Jason Bay.
With the market for pitching being so tight. I'd imagine SEA could get a very good return even if Lee is an FA. It would make more sense to probably let him go to free agency and get the supp. draft picks, than a package of players who are 13th round picks or something.Originally posted by Edmund BurkeAll that is needed for the triumph of evil, is for good men to do nothing.Comment
