Cliff Lee - Why does this guy move so much?

I think we can all agree that since the beginning of the 2008 season Cliff Lee has been one of the best pitchers in the game. Today in the Braves game they were discussing the Phillies reacquiring Lee for the stretch run. This got me to thinking, if Lee is so good why does he keep getting moved around?

If he is traded this summer that will be three trades for him in a 12 month window...why doesn't anyone just lock this guy up and keep him? The only thing I can think of is his age (31), but I just can't remember a pitcher of his quality moving teams so much.

Because he's played for a budget team who could not afford him during his FA years, then got traded for perhaps the best pitcher in the MLB. Now the Mariners are falling, quickly out of the race and want to get something for him before FA.

Trading in the MLB has very little to do with skill anymore.

What amazes me is how this guy appeared to be done a few years ago and then somehow turned into an ace overnight.

I don't know, but I wish he would get dealt to Texas.

Dude has a strikeouts/walks of 76/4 this season. That's insane.

I'd say he moves around because he's a hot commodity if it has to be pointed out. Hot commodities get flipped, and that's what they used him for time and again. I feel sorry for the team that pays for him starting next season. Age may catch up with him.

He went through a horrible and messy divorce during his last bad season. He ended up getting sent to the minors that year and then came back and won the Cy Young award the following season after clearing his mind and getting some new tail. It's crazy what good/bad a woman can do to a man's mind.

The moving ends for a while after this off-season when a perennial contender with cash (Yankees) sign him to a long-term deal...

I'm hoping the Twins make a move for him, Oswalt, or Haren.

My buddy played in the minors, you should see his splits when he was in a relationship and when he wasn't... when does STATS inc finally take those numbers into account?

My guess is the team that may acquire him is scared of having to pay them. Thus the big market teams just lick their chops waiting for free agency.

Re: Cliff Lee - Why does this guy move so much?

I believe the Phillies moved him because he was determined to become a free agent. They couldn't extend him, so they worked a deal to get an ace that they could extend in Halladay.

Lee made it clear (at the start of the season, lol) that he would not re-sign with the Mariners. So as I understand it, they can either sell him before the deadline as a rental or take the compensation picks. He and Oswalt will be the big catches -- Lee is a rental that dominated the post-season and Oswalt has another year or control I believe.

I'm pretty sure he won't play for too many more teams after this off season. It's probably also a safe bet that he'll end up playing in the playoffs this year.

LOL let's just give Seattle back the prospects they gave us for Lee and call it a deal!

Um, I think you're thinking of a different former Indian (maybe Casey Blake?) whose bad year was blamed on a divorce. Lee's been married to this girl for a while (http://www.myfoxphilly.com/dpp/sport...n_lee_phillies). Or maybe you're thinking of when his kid was really sick?

Should have kept him in the first place.
