But instead of bringing in Rhodes to face Ortiz(.192 against lefties.) in like the 6th he brings in Capps. Luckily it payed off.

I wouldn't have minded Infante being there if he would've contributed or even played. But with him on the roster he took the place of someone more deserving like Carlos Gonzalez.
The starter always goes 2 innings, and if Manuel was playing to win then the right move is to give Ubaldo and Johnson as many innings as possible. No one wants to watch Evan Meek, Arthur Rhodes, or Matt Capps pitch.

I agree, for that one game the guy is your teammate. Byrd was a big part in winning the game and earning home field advantage for the competing teams in the NL, which the Reds are at the moment.

I really don't see any advantage to hating the opponent in a non contact sport like baseball either. I would bet legitimately hating other players is pretty rare among the players.

What a dick. Hey Votto, you have Game 1 and 7 at your place if you end up making the World Series----thanks to a guy like Marlon Byrd. Jeez.

I'm going to go the other direction. How often do I hear about "back in the old days when the players wouldn't talk to each other" and "players socialize too much these days". I'm not saying he's right or wrong and I don't think it's a big enough deal to even care about, but these guys can't make anyone happy.

I can promise this they were all cool with each other at the allstar game. If they had one during those times. When you are on that team that rival means something, but not like it does with us. Think about this. Jeff Kent was a Giants he hated the Dodgers when he was a Giants, but when he was a FA he went to the Dodgers. The player don't care about the rivasl, they might say they do, but it is more like a brotherhood believe it or not. So what this guy did was a classless move, but oh well. I hope he bombs the second half.

And what does it matter if they socialize or are friendly off the field? It doesn't change their desire or effort when they get on the field to win the game. Like I said this isn't football, I can't think of one legitimate benefit hating opposing players would have.

Like somebody else said if the Reds made the World Series, Votto and the Reds would have the home field advantage in large part thanks to Byrd.

I agree it's not that big of a deal, but still feel Votto was in the wrong here.

Meh. Not an issue. Many players do not like other players even on their own team and sometimes for good justification. This is just another "story for the sake of a story" story. Give the 4th string sports writers and bloggers something to do. I'd take Votto anytime on my roster.

I think if you replaced Votto with Pedroia and Byrd with Swisher, the article would have been very different.

I guess for most sports writers, the only two teams allowed to hate each other are the Red Sox and Yankees. If it's any other team... it's "how classless."
