DENVER, CO: The Cardinals' last road trip of the first half of the season has not gotten off to a good start. A day after Brad Penny encountered a setback in his rehabilitation and the Cards suffered a brutal walk-off loss, the club lost Adam Ottavino to injury. The right-hander was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a right shoulder strain. He will return to St. Louis on Thursday for further examination. "He said his shoulder has been barking all year off and on," Cardinals manager Tony La Russa said. "We decided we would try to back him off so he can get well."
The club had hoped that rest would calm his injury down. But when the pain persisted, Ottavino was shelved. He said he's dealt with discomfort since the beginning of the year, when he ramped up from pitching in relief in Spring Training to pitching as a starter for Memphis. "It's the same thing I had when I got pushed back a few days in Memphis early on in the year," Ottavino said. "It's been kind of bothering me for a while, but my velocity was good and my control was good, so I felt like I could keep throwing. It just hasn't gone away. With the scenario that's happening right now, it's best to take care of it now."

Mr. Ottavino would have a better chance of pitching without straining his pitching shoulder if Mr. LaRusso substitutes the letter (j) to the letter (b) in his recommendation. Then, Mr. Ottavino would practice inwardly rotating his pitching shoulder.
