    Re: Javy Lopez

You know what I don't like? How lots of people often times separate the positions and compare their stats. I mean, you always hear Dave Campbell say, "Well, he's a second baseman so he isn't expected to put up the numbers of an outfielder..." If you put Nomar or A-Rod at second for a year, I don't think they will put up .290 AVG 11 HR seasons... I think they will still stay the same. Plus, second basemen aren't supposed to be small, managers just put them there.

Sorry that I got way off subject, but along with catchers... it's just coincidence that they aren't all power sluggers, but that they don't have speed isn't a coincidence... they are crouching half the game, they can't run THAT well.

Anyways, hands down to Javy... he's having an MVP year that's for sure, but then again, people are having more deserving MVP years. I would put Javy third or fourth on the list, but DEFINITELY put him up there for most improved.

It all really has more to do with defense being a priority over offense before makin the majors.

Catchers in the majors probably don't have a lot of speed b/c when they were younger they were the slowest, biggest kids on the team that the coaches felt would better protect the plate.

2nd base is usually a small position b/c you want an agile, quick, guy playin there. Taller players usually play first base for obvious reasons, pitch, or play outfield.

It's just the way things work based on body type. Once players hit the majors, then you see the strategy change as offense is a priority over defense.
