Pirates should resign Sanders and Stairs

    Consider:

Giles and Kendall are probably gone after this season. This makes Tike Redman the only definite starter for next season in the outfield. By signing Stairs, the Pirates can use him primarily at first base with Craig Wilson. JJ Davis will probably be with the club so he can play right field with Sanders in left. Wilson/Stairs can also play the outfield, allowing Sanders time off, or a platoon with Davis so he's not immediately thrust into being a full-time starter.

Hopefully they'll get a catcher in some deal, because I don't know how I feel about Humberto Cota starting full time.

Plus, since the Pirates probably won't be in contention, they can always trade Sanders and/or Stairs once Rivera/JJ Davis mature a bit more splitting time.

Re: Pirates should resign Sanders and Stairs

Well, Sanders has said he wants to stay in Pittsburgh. I mean, actually WANTS to stay. I'd like both of them back too. Why not? Both can hit and Sanders is a decent outfielder. Matt Stairs could split time between RF and 1B, so he'd get 350 or so at-bats. Hell, when he's on, he'd hit 30+ homers in 350 at-bats! You could spell Davis and Rivera, with Craig Wilson also in the mix. Also, Sanders is a solid citizen and is a leader type that would help Mac develop guys like Rivera and JJ Davis. I think with Kendall and Giles in the clubhouse, Reggie and Matt have sort of a "secondary" role. With those guys gone, I think Sanders and Stairs would be excellent clubhouse leaders.

I'd also like to see what Craig Wilson could do getting 400 or so at bats. They need to find out if he's capable of being an everyday player or if he's a solid bench player.

I agree nothing bad could come of signing Sanders and Stairs. They both can still play ball, and more importantly they can add a vetran presence in the clubhouse. The only thing is I dont think that they would sign another one year deal. I think they would both want a couple year deals, I just hope the Pirates dont end up signing them for 5 years a peice.

I think Stairs should be resigned. He's really an underated player.

Don't think 5 years will be an option.

I'll tell you; a 2-year deal at about $1.8 to $2 million a year for Sanders would probably get it done.

Stairs would probably be happy at about $1.2 to 1.3 mil / yr for 2 years. He's at $850 k now.
