Charlie Manuel is dumb, but is he also a fool?

Charlie Manuel solidified himself into an exclusive list of the dumbest people in history when he selected Omar Infante to the All-Star team this year. I don't think anyone could argue that Infante was the least deserving All-Star selection in recent memory - perhaps all time.

Could it be that his stupidity will cost him and his team a playoff berth? Since the All-Star break, Infante has been inspired, hitting .363 and also hit a leadoff home run today against the Cubs. Surely, one player does not carry a team to the playoffs; likewise, the Phillies have struggled with many key injuries.

With that said, it seems that Charlie Manuel may have lit a fire under a rival team's player who will now be playing every day (Infante, of course, was not an everyday player when selected to the All-Star game). It will be interesting to see how Infante's performance affects the October status of the Phillies.

The dumbest person in baseball history? Not by a longshot. That distinction goes to Terry Bevington. The White Sox manager from 1995-1997. That dude was clueless. I've seen a lot of dumb managers since then and none of them have held a candle to Bevington.

Infante has been huge this year, but I seriously doubt his AS selection has had a whole lot to do with his performance. He has hit very well all year, and was even hitting in the .340's for a while last year before he injured his hand.

The Braves have been very fortunate in that they've had two(the other being Prado) young utility bench guys blossom into very productive regular players. Charlie Manuel may indeed be stupid, but he's hardly responsible for Infante's good work thus far.

You could be right, but I'm not sure. While Infante was hitting well before the break, one would expect a player like him to regress rather than improve as the season goes on. I have to imagine Infante was just as surprised to hear about his nomination as anyone else. Perhaps this sparked a desire in him to prove his credibility as a major league hitter.

I would love to hear what Infante has to say about his selection and how it has affected his attitude since.

huh? What are you talking about? I'm a Phillies fan. I like what Charlie has done. I might not agree w/ everything, but he's brought winning to this team. As for the Votto/Infante deal...Infante made it to the all-star game because he was hitting, and has always been a great defender. An emphasis on defense is ever-increasing.

Pujols was going to make the ASG no matter what. AGon is deserving also. Are you saying Manuel should've taken 3 first baseman on his bench should Ryan Howard have been there?

I was speaking more to the premise that Charlie Manuel somehow made Omar Infante a better player by selecting him to the ASG.
