And there are two waiver deal deadlines. The minor leaguers deadline was yesterday (reason why the Giles trade happened yesterday) and the one for the major leaguers is on the 31st of this month.Comment

no, it's actually networks like ESPN's fault for oversimplifying it. July 31 is the non-waiver deadline, not the deadline.
After that date, however, it's MUCH harder to make deals, since every team in the league gets a chance to stop you before you do it. It's actually a neat risk-reward thing. Do I put a claim in and stop team a from getting a guy? If I do, I might end up stuck with him, like the yanks did with heredia.Comment
