Matsui II..Who wants him?..Three teams he wants to play for..Contract$

Kazuo Matsui is a young player(27) from Japanese Baseball League. He is a SS that has gold glove caliber defense: won 3 gold gloves, Has speed: he is believed to be faster than Ichiro, and Has pop in his bat. Basically he is a five tool player. He supposed to be the best SS in JBL's history, and the best current player in Japan. He plays for Seibu Lions, like you know who they are. Let's just say that it's equivalent of the BoSox, in terms of that, they're the rivals of the National Team, Yomiuru Giants.(Matsui I's team.) Get it BoSox and Yanks? Good.
He lead the league couple of times in numerous categories; Triples, Hits, Steals, Doubles, so on. Also, won the MVP.

Now, the teams he supposedly wants to play for are, in order, based on latest Sports Weekly issue, #1 - Yanks, #2 -Mariners, #3 - BoSox.

But I think I can safely say that the WHOLE MLB league wants this guy on their team, or wouldn't mind having him.
Some of the teams that showed interest in him are, California(Padres, Angels, Dodgers), Mariners, Chicago, New York, and the D'Backs.

    Some info about some teams..

Yanks - Him going to us high. Hideki Matsui, the icon of all Japan, is signed by the Yanks and has been very successful. This helps Japan and our chances with their players. Yankees are known globally. Though, as I said earlier, he was playing against his rivals, Giants, which the Yanks are affialated with. Not sure if loyalty applies here. Also, I can see him playing 2nd base, and Soriano in OF(RF?), again. Would prefer if Jeter went to second, though.

Mets - A New York team, like the Yanks. Has the money. Can use him for 2nd/3rd base.

Seattle - Loves Japanese players; Ichiro, Sasaki, Hasegawa.
This team HAS the money, and willing to spend it on Japanese players. Can use a 3rd/SS badly.

BoSox - Has the money, 3rd/2nd.

Chicago - Needs SS badly, and the Cubs needs this type of player.

Dodgers - Got the money, needs the offense, needs a SS badly.

The rest need him at SS.

Finally, his contract. He will want less money than Tejada, and most Jap. hitters signed contracts around the year of, 3 years - 21 mill, 28 mill.

    Thoughts?

" I look at him and it's getting to the point where it's just scaring me. He looks younger but he doesn't carry himself in a younger manner. He's impressive, and I'm glad we drafted him. "
    - Lavar Arrington on his new Redskins teammate Sean Taylor.

If you ask me, Padres might pursue Matsui, but he isn't a real priority because of an upcoming SS named Khalil Greene. I see him going to the Mariners.

He should go to the Mariners!

Where would he play if he went to the Yankees?... Frankly I think he should be included in the amateur draft. Let the Devil Rays or the Pirates or Milwaukee draft him, then if he wants to go play for the Yanks the Yanks could buy him from that team or trade for him.

I think it's been the rumor here in the NW that the M's are the front-runner to sign him, and he would fit well in their infield. But I still believe in the draft idea. This going to the highest bidder stuff is getting old.

First AI great thread you posted your ideas and thoughts very well so I will do the same in return.

(just a note tho, the JBL Giants are more akin to the NY/San Fran Giants then the Yanks it's just that they have had the same success as the Yankees have had here.)

Ok so let's go with the teams one by one:

NYY: I'm sorry but I really can't see this happening. Altho with the money the Yanks have it very well could happen. Tho I think it would screw up a lot of things. Soriano looks to have finally gotten his bearings as a 2nd baseman and looks like he'd be excellent in that position for years to come. So by putting him in the OF again it'll be back to square one on the field for him. I also think that Jeter is one of, if not the best SS in MLB in terms of fielding. Don't really know if he'd like to go to 2B but guess he'd do it for the team.

NYM: They already have Jose Reyes! I guess they could put him at 2nd tho. Who's playing 2B for the Mets since Alomar left? They've got the money but it's not a very good atmosphere there for a foriegner. I've found that the NYM media to be even more hypersensitive and paranoid then the Yanks to some extent.

Ms: This could be the best fit as they haven't had a very good replacement for A-Rod since he left. There's already a few japanese players there and so it would foster a sense of community on the team. Kind of like the Blue Jays in the '80s with the latin ballplayers. The same thing bout both clubs? Same GM! Pat Gillick

BoSox: Hmm don't they already have Nomar at SS and Mueller at 3rd? I guess they could add Matsui and put him at 3rd base. Has this Matsui guy ever played 3B at all at least semi-regularly? I know that the BoSox nation would love him but things could get sour (a la Pedro right now) Plus that team has one of the most screwed up media/ballclub relations in all MLB!

Cubs: Anything is better then Alex Gonzalez!

LA: Like you said really needs offense and a good SS badly. They don't neccessarily have the money tho. (or at least they're not spending as much as they used to) The Dodgers organization has been known to support players of every race and creed and I believe Matsui would be a good fit there.

So here's how I rank the contenders:

                      Seattle
                      NYY
                      BoSox
                      Cubs
                      NYM
                      Dodgers

I don't think if he would object playing 3rd/2nd, but if he does, then that just lessens the teams down.

For Yanks, puting Alfonso in the RF, solves their RF woes. I don't want to see Vlad on the Yanks.
For Jeter, I think you're overestimating his fielding. The guy doesn't have range, and I don't think he's one of the best in fielding. He doesn't have a strong arm either.

Mets, I don't think they're going to replace him at SS. I believe they're currently platooning at 2nd. Jay Bell, and McEwing.

Dodgers, selling the team, so I question their spending(s).

M's, have been going hard after this guy.

BoSox, seeing what kind of season Mueller's having, I can see them dumping Todd Walker for this kid.

                            Cubs/ChiSox - Need a SS.

Angels/Padres - I'm guessing, Angels have the $$. Know the Padres will this offseason.

Oh, and I like dce's idea about the amateur draft, but who the heck is going to sign him? I don't think any team involved is going to dish out much dough on one player. Don't know what kind of contract he will demand.
