I think he will go to the Mariners because they are the only team out of the possibles that don't have a left side of the infield, so he can play SS. Plus - they have money and will spend it on Japanese players.

This helps the teams..how? They will probably want ****load of players back and for the other team to pick up their contracts. And if they want money back, that doesn't guarantee that they will use it to improve their ballclubs. This is just screwing other teams. Which ain't right.

So the Yankees, Red Sox, Mets, Dodgers...etc are getting 'screwed' if they can't just use the money generated from their larger population size and TV revenue to sign every player on the planet which then creates a talent imbalance so deep it alienates the fans of every small market team in the country? ... I don't quite follow that.

Look, I agree that many owners are moochers and put a thimble-ful of the recources into putting a good team on the field than do your favorite team. But many of these teams operate out of locations with a thimble full of the financial return the Yanks are guaranteed to get if they are winning games. I know you like to glorify the effort of the Yankees and lack of effort of other teams to justify what your team does, but Steinbrenner operates with the leagues largest safety net. It's not as black and white as you think.

Running a world-wide draft guarantees fairness from top to bottom. If we are going to consider Matsui II a rookie, then he should be treated like every other college and high school kid in the nation. Otherwise, lets just get rid of the amateur draft too... it's a double standard. Let the teams from NY, CHI, LA... etc, sign every good collegiant and HS player in the nation and then they can have their own league with 8 teams representing the big cities of the country. Then there can be several smaller leagues for the smaller cities of the country. Why not? I bet the prices for concessions would be more affordabe at these 'lesser' league games anyway.

I'm sorry but I'm not sympathetic towards other "small market" teams. Though I agree that Kaz is a rookie, in terms of MLB experience, but he's not going to be asking for the same type of contract that a drafted College or HS kid would.

I know you have no sympathy, but that's beside the point. And I'm not saying Matsui Duo can't play for a big market team. If he were put in the draft, he'd most likely end up getting drafted by a team that had the best chance of signing him. Like the Mets' or Baltimore. It's not perfect, but at least it's a process. Rather than the 'who's got more green' bidding wars between the super-powers. If that crap goes, if Contreres/Matsui is the reality of every off-season, let's just ditch the draft altogether like I said in the previous post. I mean, why offer 'freedom of choice' as far as employment to players who aren't even American? Offer it all around. Let's make it a big fat auction with Fat George in the front row.

So you have no sympathy for Minnesota, Kansas City, Toronto, Florida, tampa and Montreal?

Minny, KC, Toronto and Florida have all tried either in the recent past or right now to play with the big boys but whether it be because of tight fisted ownership (Minny) mismanagement (Florida and to lesser extent TO) and waning fan attendence (all cities cept for TB which never had fans)

These teams have all tried to play with the big boys. They have all developed good talent over the years and have had some success (cept TB) Now just because they don't have the money doesn't mean they don't want to win. I think it's kinda ignorant to sit high and mighty saying "WOOHOO Yankees are the best we can spend all this money"

In the end it's the teams like the Yankees who overspend that end up setting the market value for players and put these players WAY out of the small market teams' price range.

It's all due to cause and affect. it'd be nice if Matsui II went to a place like Toronto or KC or TB instead of going to teams that can cherry pick who they want.

So you have no sympathy for Minnesota, Kansas City, Toronto, Florida, tampa and Montreal?
