What? No love for Ron Washington? I'm not surprised by Black. You have to remember the voting was done before the postseason.

but was it done before the Padres choked?

I mean, as a Reds fan, I obviously wanted to see Dusty get it, but I could have lived with Cox getting it. He did a great job managing through countless injuries throughout the season (Heyward, Prado, Chipper, Jurrjens, the list can go on.)

Why are you surprised? He took a team that everyone expected to have lost 95+ games and managed them one game within a playoff birth. I guess taking a roster where the payroll has been mandated to the $40 millions because of the judge involved in Moores' divorce case along with a that roster being filled with no-names after June doesn't mean much.

I believe all the major awards are voted on in early September.

Ron didn't lose his closer and then his best power hitter ..

                Touche,

It just seems Gardenhire has a lock on that award though.

I think Black was the right choice. The Giants had a case too. But with Bochy having the best pitching staff in baseball he had a lot to work with. Black had pretty much Matt L. Good for Black.

This, Dusty did a good job but what Bud Black did with that team was more impressive.

This is his first time winning it ever.

Really? I could've sworn he won it at least one other time?

                        Well I stand corrected.

He's finished second four or five times. That's probably why you think he won it at some point.

Up until today Ron Gardenhire was always a bridesmaid, never a bride. Finishing second 5 times.

Baker and Bochy had teams that were expected to be if not playoff contenders, at least better teams than they were in 2009. Black had a team that was expected to be in last place from start to finish and wound up in first place for most of the season. You can't really go wrong with any of the three but Black did much more with much, much less than Baker or Bochy.

Long overdue for Gardy. He has been easily the most consistently good regular season manager in the AL for the past decade. What he has done with what he has had over the years is nothing short of amazing. I give him a lot of crap for some of his in-game decisions, but his results (in the regular season) can't be discounted. Congrats to him for finally breaking through in the voters' eyes.
