Series MVP Get Slap in the Face

    http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=5928384

Seriously. I believe it's not about the money, it's about the respect. $1M for the World Series MVP? He's not a flash in the pan guy, he's been a consistent player for a solid career.

Say all you want about him playing in 72 games, as it is still a slap in the face to Renteria. I don't even like him that much...

They payed him 18 million for 3 years. That was a slap in the face to the Giants.

Coming from a Sox fan, I can do nothing but agree.

Complaining about 1 million is a slap in the face to all those who are out of work as we speak.

The minute players start getting paid for made up awards based on a 7 game series is the minute that GM should be fired.

Good, we don't need you for more than $1 million. Thanks for the ring.

                  ^^^Win.

Teams [of every sport] have made so many boneheaded contracts based off of a post season performance or two, look at Carlos Beltran. Nice to see the Giants aren't one of them.

One million is REALLY low considering how absurdly inflated MLB contracts are at this point. But still, he's a grown man. He doesn't have to play for them. If he feels he's better off staying at home with his family, working his private businesses, then retire.

Eh, I get it. I get that he didn't produce much for his previous contract, but that was his previous contract. The previous contract shouldn't have any bearing on his current one.

The truth is: $1 MM is a total disrespect to a league veteran. Yea, he doesn't have to play if he doesn't want to, but that offer is below value.

Is it below market value? Probably not. And I'm in no way saying that Sabean is an idiot for not offering more. He's actually smart for not doing so. I don't think Renteria deserves much more than $1 MM a year.

But, when the league average salary is $3 MM, it is very understandable for a veteran to be upset with being paid only 2x more than the league minimum for a under 6-year player.

Re: Series MVP Get Slap in the Face

Disrespect or not, the offer to play baseball for the defending champs in 2011 for a very decent living is on the table. If you don't like it, sign with another team or don't play next year.

Honestly, these athletes need to quit complaining. There are people starving in this country and losing their homes. I know some of you will tell me that's neither here nor there, but I tend to look at things in a bigger perspective. One million dollars is a LOT OF MONEY.

As another person said, if he doesn't like it, he should retire and continue to make his living through other ventures. I guess Renteria thinks that there should be some type of loyalty given to him by the Giants... too bad players proved long ago that loyalty is merely a pleasant idea and rarely happens.

This is the problem I have with loyalty is the team pays you a lot of money and made you famous. Sure your talent is what keep you there but you get the point.

Like a one Derek Jeter. If he was on the Pirates, he would not be who he was. The Yankees had a HUGE role in his celebrity.

I'm not going to comment on specifically on the merits of Renteria and what he deserves at this point of his career, but I'm getting increasingly sick of the argument that its a lot of money and they should be happy. Players are USED to making this money. You have to look at it on the scale of a normal person's yearly income. Offering 1 million in this type of situation is like offering someone 30k when they're used to making 100k.

                              It's all about proportions.
