your second point is the right one. MLB doesn't care about the division race being ruined, if they did there'd be no wild card.

The key is to have division rivals, preferably bitter ones, play for a shot at the world series. MLB envisioned sox-yanks for the pennant when they did it. They'll get it again this year.

if u look there the orioles won the al east with 98 wins, yankees won the wild card with 96 wins, cleveland won the central with 86, and seattle won the west with 90. So u would think the Orioles with the best record in the majors would be rewarded and play cleveland, but the yankees played cleveland and the oriloes played seattle. So did it used to be a different format?
