who plays who in the playoffs
Does anyone knows how the playoff matchups work? Is it always the team with the best record versus the wild card, unless the wild card is in thier own divison...and if that happens they play the team with the worst record that is not in their divison? give me a link pleaseTags: None -
Re: who plays who in the playoffs
you've got it exactly right, currently in the NL (assuming the wild card is the Phils or Fish) the matchups would be
Winner of the central vs. Braves
Wild Card vs. Giants
If the Dodgers pull out the wild card then they would play the Braves and the Giants would get the central winner.
Then of course there's a good chance the Giants overtake the Braves for best record, in which case the scenario would flip flop. -

that is EXACTLY how it works, and personally, i hate it....why cant a division winner play the WC team in their own division?!?!? i mean, they only play each other 19 TIMES during the season to begin with, so whats 3-5 more, i would think it would make for a BETTER matchup anyway....but i digress....soory that this had nothing to do with the posted topic..cheers yallComment

Re: who plays who in the playoffs
2 reasons
1. If the div. winner played the wild card (from their div.) right out of the gate it would be lame, where's the incentive to win the division? homefield? Not good enough reason IMO. The wild card should have to beat somebody to get a second shot at the team who beat them out in the season. (Kinda like a 'loser's bracket')
2. Having division rivals meet in the LCS would be awesome, much cooler than having them play in the first round of the playoffs.Comment

Re: who plays who in the playoffs
your second point is the right one. MLB doesn't care about the division race being ruined, if they did there'd be no wild card.
The key is to have division rivals, preferably bitter ones, play for a shot at the world series. MLB envisioned sox-yanks for the pennant when they did it. They'll get it again this year.Comment
