      Let's not forget that smart pitchers frequently pitch to contact for various reasons. This leads to errors and occasional mistakes.

        So wouldn't it not be smart to "pitch to contact" since it leads to errors and other mistakes? I would think a "smart pitcher" pitches for strikeouts.
