Thoughts on the urge of a tabacoo ban

I dont think it will ever happen and personally Its been a part of baseball history forever wheather you like it or not. Just curious to see what everyone's thoughts are about the urge to ban chew and dip from MLB. I know its "banned" in the minors but I can tell you first hand it is still in heavy use down their despite the ban and im sure if MLB did ban it players would still use it.

IMO its part of baseball and it should be a players choice to use it. Its not a good thing to start using as I have been dipping since I was 15 and I am now 38. Luckily I have good teeth and have been very fortunate because I am a heavy user. It is a bad habit that is hard to quit and I have tried. Whether they ban it or not guys will still do it anyway so why bother plus it is really no ones business but the players that do it.

Yea I agree. Thats where I stand on it. I also am a dipper and it is tough to stop. I also brush my teeth and gums REALLY well. ha. But yea its a personal choice and the players all adults and should have the choice. The only way they will ban it is if the players association will agree to the ban and I am willing to bet anything that will never agree to it. Too many coaches and players either chew or dip. I know they say they dont want kids seeing it on TV but dont they still make that gum called "big league chew"? Thats glorifying it more then showing a player with it on the field on tv. But yea I just wanted to see what everyone thought about it.

I'm sure it could easily be banned eventually.

There are more than enough people who neither use or like chewing tobacco who will argue how bad it is for kids to be watching on TV. And those people usually get their way before it's all said and done.

Just think if you could go back in time and tell people in the 50's and 60's about all of the new anti-smoking laws. They'd probably laugh in you face as they were lighting up another cigarette.

Personally, I don't have a problem with it at all. I grew up watching baseball stars that I idolized doing it, and I really never even thought twice about wanting to try it. I've always just thought it looked like a disgusting habit, so I never went out of my way to try it. Though if I had grown up around more people who did it, maybe I would've tried it at some point.

Forget about just baseball, ban it altogether.

I smoked two packs a day for 13 years and quit cold turkey five years ago.

Smoking is the only true regret I have in my life at this point.

All forms of tobacco use, smokeless or not, are pretty much the most disgusting thing anyone can do. It not only is detrimental to your health (and the health of those around you if it involves smoke) but is also a big waste of money.

I used to think they were just chewing gum or sunflower seeds when I was a kid, so they influenced me but in a misdirecting way. Good thing I was naive to not really knowing what "chew" was.

I don't mind it either way. It's a part of baseball I guess, but man I didn't like seeing my friends use it in high school baseball.

Lol.. yeah, I used to always spit as much as humanly possible when I was playing baseball as a kid. I usually didn't have anything in my mouth either, I just thought I was supposed to spit more when I was on a baseball field.

Good view points from everyone. I just dont see the players agreeing to a ban. Thats the only way it can be banned. And even if it is banned it will still be used no doubt. I played in the AAA staduim in round rock Texas a couple years ago for my adult league championship game and there was cans of dip and bags of redman laying around all over in the dug out left over from the AAA game that was the night before. But yea on TV kids can see it for sure. Heck yesterday watching the Rangers game the camera went on the Rangers pitching coach as he was filling his mouth with some redman. I just dont think it will ever get banned but who knows.

I disagree. I have never smoked or used any type of tobacco product but I believe that persons should have a choice whether or not they use tobacco.

Professional baseball players are employees. Ballparks are workplaces. If MLB wants to ban chew from the workplace, they have every right to do so. Nobody's saying players can't chew tobacco on their own time.

Do we let players take vodka shots in between innings? I really don't see why chew is any different in a sense. It's weird why this is acceptable.

However on the otherhand it really doesn't effect the game so I don't see why they would change the rules on this. After the whole steroid debacle if the game of baseball is still of any influence to anyone, I think they'll survive another 20 years of players spitting chew on camera.

How many players these days even chew tobacco? I have to think it's probably only around 10% that actually do that compared to the majority that used to chew back in the '70s and '80s.
