The thing is, It will only ever be banned if the players association agrees to a ban. Regardless of a ban they will still use it out there. Its all over the minors still. They are supposed to be fined in the minors if they are caught but I dont think its monitored that closely to be honest. These days its mostly just dip that the guys are using. Maybe the older vets and coaches are still "chewing". To me its always been a part of the game and should be left alone.

Re: Thoughts on the urge of a tabacoo ban
Personally I could care less if these players smoke, chew, drink, etc, in the privacy of their own home.
However, with being a public figure, a professional athlete, the reality is that kids out there look up to these guys. They want to throw like them, swing like them, pitch like them, talk like them, wear the same clothes and hats, DO THE SAME THINGS. For that reason, it is crucial that chewing be banned for players during MLB games. Go home and chew, all you want. But while the impressionable 8 and 10 year olds are at home watching and emulating all of the things they do, players chewing during the game can only have a negative impact on society.Originally Posted by Briman123

Re: Thoughts on the urge of a tabacoo ban
Slightly off topic, but this reminded me of when I was a kid I used to imitate Darryl Strawberry and his HUGE chew. I would buy a pack of tootsie rolls and put about 5-6 in my mouth, chew them into a nice big "chew" and stick them in the side of my mouth the entire game.Originally Posted by Briman123

Re: Thoughts on the urge of a tabacoo ban
I will have to disagree with this. There are alot of things bad that players do that we here about now days with the internet and all the news. Should MLB ban guys for cheating on there wives and whoring around? Because thats wrong and sends a wrong message to young kids that its OK.
With tobacco as we have seen throughout this thread even in the smallest sample size, it is considered a tradition of the game and either positively or not a factor at all. Never in a negative viewpoint like off field conduct usually is. That's where the issue is. Since the players are in such an impressionable situation I've always thought it'd be to their best PR image to steer clear of such products once they noticed the effects other tobacco products were having on the lower levels.Last edited by lilbiggio; 04-08-2011, 04:43 PM.Comment

Re: Thoughts on the urge of a tabacoo ban
No one is suggesting to ban the players for chewing tobacco. The difference is that when a player cheats on his wife the media completely throws the guy under the bus so it does become really hard to think the situation is "ok". You never see the player portrayed in a positive light at the end of the day.

Re: Thoughts on the urge of a tabacoo ban
I have no problem at all with dip or chew in the majors but they could however not leave a camera on a player packing a lipper this long.

Re: Thoughts on the urge of a tabacoo ban
No your right. Not really the best example to use. I personally am a tobacco user so I am probably am bias toward this subject. I believe its a choice and if some dumb *** kid feels he needs to follow and copy another guy than be his own man, its not the ball players fault. I guess I feel baseball players are not the only role models in this world that do things that are bad. Like I said I am bias as I have been dipping and chewing since i have been 15 and i am 38 now. Just like people who are not users and think it is disgusting will be bias against the use of it.Originally posted by G PericoIf I ain't got it, then I gotta take it

Re: Thoughts on the urge of a tabacoo ban
I do not feel a baseball player should be punish for a kid making a dumb choice. Things like the video above should not be allowed by a camera man as that just enhancing it but a player should not be punished.Comment

Re: Thoughts on the urge of a tabacoo ban
I mean I see what you're saying, but its kind of harsh. The MLB has to look out for their fanbase, and that includes the 4 year old watching games with his grandparents that will become a lifelong fan and teach his kids the game. And you say punish a player like they are telling them they can no longer do something fundamental to the game. They're telling them to quit an already bad habit.Originally posted by G PericoIf I ain't got it, then I gotta take it

Re: Thoughts on the urge of a tabacoo ban
It should be up to the parents to teach the kid that it's bad if they see it. Kids don't start chewing because they see ballplayers doing it. They start chewing because one of their friends has some and they try it. I think people are overestimating the effect of a kid seeing a ballplayer chewing on TV.Comment
