The only difference between Duscherer, and who knows how many other professional athletes, is that he wasn't afraid to say it.

Yeah I agree with snepp here. I'm sure there are TONS of athletes who don't really have a passion for the game itself, but play it for the money and because they are good at it. Just because they are good at it doesn't mean they love it. Shawn Andrews comes to mind

Of course. I think most of us look at these guys with a healthy amount of envy. I mean, playing a game that you are *supposed* to love and getting paid millions of dollars to do it? Never having to worry about the mortgage, or your kid's college, or anything else? Sounds like a dream world.

For most of them, it is. For some, the passion is not there, and that is what makes them like some (a lot?) of us. How many people here can honestly say that they love their job? Probably a lot, but less than 50 percent. That means, these comments could be made by any of us.

People tell him to retire, or they make him feel like a whiner because he makes all of this money and doesn't always love what he does... Sounds like the average guy at OS. I don't know why people would think his comments are so out of left field, nor do I understand how his comments could be that hard to believe.

Like I said... He has a choice, just like the rest of us -- if he doesn't like his chosen field, he should get out while he still has a decent amount of years left on this earth.

I don't. I think the dude probably has very little love for what he does. He continues to do it because of the financial security and the pressure.

This isn't the first time he's expressed his feelings on the matter and I doubt it'll be the last.

I'm good at my job and I like the money but I don't love my job. I wish I could find a way to support my lifestyle now without having to do what I do for a living. There are tons of people who would feel blessed to do what I do. Hell I'm blessed in a way.

The only difference is I'm not a professional athlete. I don't think his feelings are that far off of those of a normal person.

Guess I don't see a problem with what he said.

The guys at 2K should release a DLC character of him in Top Spin 4. After all, they already have his model from the MLB 2K games right?

For as much as I love baseball... For as much as I'd like to believe that I would love playing professionally...

I was outside today playing with my son, who is nearly 15 months old. I thought to myself how horrible it would be to spend so much time away from him. If I were a big league player, I'd spend half of the year away from him and miss so much stuff.

I'm not trying to say that I think being a millionaire baseball player is a bad life, because I don't think it is -- but I can see how some of these guys could have times when their job wasn't that fun to them and how there could be times when they just didn't enjoy it.

Kind of a random thought I know... But when you really think about it, it's understandable and the comments telling guys they should suck it up, they're rich, etc isn't really all that fair.

Married with a family I agree I can see the downside.

If you are single and just wanting to live life though I think it would be pretty awesome, like Patrick Kane for example (not baseball but similar), that guy does some questionable stuff but you know he is enjoying his star status.

Yeah, of course. If you're single, it would be the perfect life. Money and fame... The freedom to do anything you wanted, when you wanted to do it.

                          Pretty appealing.

But for people who are family men to their core, I can see how it would be extremely tough. I don't know if Justin Duchscherer's comments have anything to do with his family, but if they do, I understand completely.

I couldn't be away from my son for that long. It'd kill me. Even working five days a week and still seeing every day (though not as much I'd like) is tough enough, but to go on long road trips and not see him would be tough. The money wouldn't make it any easier. Then again, if I played pro, I'd make it so that my wife and son would travel with me as much as possible.

I'm babbling now... But my point is, even though it seems like a great life, I doubt it's as glamorous or as fun as it seems and it creates a disconnect from the people that you hold dear. I say this from my experience by having a friend who currently plays for the Pirates. He loves it, but it's also pretty tough on him.

Perfect example of a pro athlete getting caught up in emotion and letting his guard down. Plus even if he feels that way who are you and I to judge him? End of the day yes its a job and it's a game. Not his fault he gets paid millions. Also no he doesn't owe anything anything.

I think the real kicker is that he's a pitcher. He doesn't get to appear in every game, and even when he does it's normally only for an inning at most. I'm not saying all pitchers suffer from any sort of depression in this sense, but you'd think he'd love the game a bit more if he got to play 150 games a year, most of the innings, and do some batting, defense, and baserunning (given he had those skills). I can see where being away from family would definitely be rough for him, or any pitcher for that matter.
