Ryan Braun signs extension through 2020...

http://tinyurl.com/3fwnn55 OS murders the URL so I tinyurl'd it.

Well. This made my day. I remember a day when the Brewers couldn't afford things like this.

It's also the official death of the Prince Fielder era in Milwaukee. He was probably gone anyways, but this confirms it.

A few interesting notes on the extension:
The annual yearly value of $21 million is second-highest ever for an outfielder (after Manny Ramirez's last two-year deal with Dodgers).
This makes Braun one of just two players signed through 2020, along with Colorado's Troy Tulowitzki. The only other players signed through 2018 are Joe Mauer and Adrian Gonzalez.
Among teams in the bottom third of MLB markets (according to Nielsen), this is the largest deal ever given out in terms of AAV and fifth-highest in total value (after Helton, Tulowitzki, Matt Holliday, Mike Hampton).
This is the largest deal in franchise history by total (was Braun's $45M/8 year deal) and AAV (was Prince Fielder's $15.5M for 2011). The total is thus more than double any previous Brewers deal.

They better hope he stays productive in his 30s because the back end of that deal is gonna KILL THEM!

      Wowo.

      A Brewer for life eh?

      Should be interesting.

He's definitely deserving of a deal like this. Both from a talent and personable perspective.

        This.

That is worse than the Ryan Howard deal as far as the back end/age is concerned.

While I understand the logic that their production may not be of the same caliber when they reach those ages.....for all intents and purposes when Howard was putting up monster numbers prior to his record salary arbitration deal the Phillies were getting the bargain. Same goes for Braun...

So what is the issues really? Fair is fair. No?

As much as i would have liked to one day see Braun crushing balls out of Fenway in a Red Sox uniform it's nice to see the smaller market teams start locking up star players.

Nice to see a guy that wants to spend his career with 1 team. To many guys now days can't wait to get to free agency to get the most money.

                Love it.

Hope Heyward can sign a very long-term deal as well.

You make a good argument but for teams like the Brewers who are in a small market the back end of that contract is gonna restrict what they can do payroll wise in those years. They MIGHT get lucky and be able to trade him like the Jays did with Vernon Wells but then again maybe not.

On the other hand it's great to see a guy likely being a Brewer for life and seeing players and teams making long term commitments like that is great for maintaining familiarity with players on the same team but the cost is sometimes a bit high IMO.

Good for him and the Brewers, but why? Didn't they already have him under contract for 5 years?

                      Yes they did.

The Brewers know Prince Fielder is probably gone after this season and there were a few Ryan Braun trade rumors last winter so i think this is a kind of message to Brewer fans that they are not going to dismantle this team anytime soon.

Err, I don't know if that's sarcasm or not, but he launched a 3-run homer right as you typed that. Both sides won with this deal.

Haha so one 3 run home run makes the whole deal worth it.

Anyway - Fangraphs had a little write up about it

Yeah, because his start to his career doesn't speak for itself...

Look, Milwaukee doesn't get to lock up All-Star caliber players very often (or they haven't chosen to do so in the past). It's good to see the ownership really committing to winning.
