When you have a plate open to slide at you slide. If you think going in hard is not a punk move fine. But you intent is to hit the catcher hard enough to drop the ball. So to me you have a choice, but he made one to look good to the coaches. They love hustle and he made that play. It was a punk move because he had part of the plate. Just look around the league and see how other old time catchers think about this. It is very interesting to get their point of view too.

He had a choice, but it isn't the job of Cousins to look out for the safety of Posey. It was a bang bang play, and he was trying to make a very tough tag up from a catch in shallow center. He decided in a split second that it was going to be very close play, and that he had a better chance to score a crucial run by taking out the catcher.
It's currently part of the game, regardless of how many catchers or ex-players you can find against it. I've heard plenty of opinions from other ball players that have no problem with Cousins on this play, so that isn't a definitive answer to anything. It doesn't make Cousins a punk, especially when you look at how bad he felt afterward, and how he's tried to reach out to Posey and the Giants.
Right now, the only punk I see in this situation is Brian Sabean. Now, more than everComment

Scott Cousins and the marlins have handled this like they should, the Giants obviously can't handle it and are still bitter almost a week later.Last edited by Chrisksaint; 06-03-2011, 12:01 PM.Saints, LSU, Seminoles, Pelicans, Marlins, LightningComment

Re: 5/30 - 6/5 Game Discussion Thread
Death threats are NOT a part of the game of baseball, or life. Death threats are not just some unfortunate side effect of the nature of baseball. Death threats are against the law.
Death threats are NOT acceptable. Also, what Sabean said is NOT acceptable and he should be fined heavily by MLB. You cannot tell me it's OK or professional in any sense for a GM to go out and say he hopes a player never plays another game again.
The Giants organization and their fans need to get over this. Catchers are in harm's way when there are plays at the plate. Don't like it? Put some scrub lifetime .220 hitter back there instead of your star player.Ryan Spencer

Re: 5/30 - 6/5 Game Discussion Thread
I will be honest with you. If Posey did this to someone I would call him a punk too. It has nothing to with Posey or being a Giants it has to do with being a person that thinks it is time to protect the catcher. But I will admit it has been in the game a long time and I can live with it. Doesn't mean I like it and doesn't mean I will not complain about it if it happens again to another catcher. I am done with this subject. Also big game to night with the Rocks. Giants are playing really good ball right now. So looking forward to tonights game.Comment

Yeah he did. He was trying to show his teammates. Also did you hear what Herms had to say about it? Kinda of funny to hear his take on it.Comment

Re: 5/30 - 6/5 Game Discussion Thread
Death treats have always been a part of sports. What is so hard to understand there? I am not saying it is right I am saying you can't change that. People are crazy. But you can change a rule. I have seen a lot of players get death threats. And that will not change. That is all I am saying. If you play pro sports you are most likely going to get hurt and if you make a costly error you are going to probably get death threats. I just think the hitting the catcher rule is one rule that can be changed to protect them. That is all I am saying. But please if you guys disagree with me PM I don't want to respond anymore on this thread.Comment

It sounds like you're saying that instead of prosecuting the handful of fringe lunatics that think it's OK to terrorize someone, that we should change the rules to cater to them.Comment

No I am saying it will not change. Fans will still do it. I am saying change the catcher rule. You can't change fans thinking. There are a lot of crazy people. It is wrong and I wish it wasn't a part of sports, but it is. And I agree they should be charged. I never understood how someone could want someone dead because of an error they made. It is just a game.Comment
