    Individual LOB question

I didn't want to make a whole new thread for this question, but my post wasn't responded to earlier so I suppose I'll just ask here.

Does your individual LOB stat increase when you sacrifice bunt runners over? So, where a ground out that moved runners over to second and third will leave you with +2 LOB, will a sac do the same thing? Or are you exempt from a hindrance on your stat sheet because you gave up your at bat to do the job?

    Thanks.

I thought the LOB stat was only kept when you leave runners on base at the end of an inning.

Nope, there's a team LOB stat and an individual LOB stat. If you leave any runners on base in your at bat at any time you produce an out, your individual LOB increases. The team LOB is only for runners stranded at the end of an inning. Take some random box score for instance:

Box score for the Kansas City Royals vs. Cleveland Indians MLB game from May 4, 2008 on ESPN. Includes all pitching and batting stats.

You'll see every player have an individual LOB statistic that adds up, but underneath their lines you'll see text written in bold that says "Team LOB:" and some value. That value represents the number of runners left on base to end an inning. I'm referring to the individual LOB numbers next to the players' names.

So my question basically is: Does a sacrifice bunt increase this number? It would seem rather unfair for the player if it does, even though they technically are still left on base. I just need to know for a program that I'm writing that handles stats for my sister's softball team, and this exact situation came up last weekend when I realized that my program would increase that number after a sac. I'm wondering if this should not be the case and if I should correct it.

Judging by the game you linked, no. Gutierrez had a sac bunt in the sixth, but doesn't have any LOB.

Pretty sure the individual LOB is only if you leave runners on base with two outs.

I had always thought the same thing, but when I looked at that boxscore, I realized I was incorrect.

In the game Blzer linked Casey Blake left 2 on base. He didn't end an inning, so the LOB must have come from when he left Ryan Garko on base in the third and fifth.

I guess it would helped to look at the boxscore, I might have seen the breakdown at the bottom of individual LOB with 2 outs or even the fact that the team LOB didn't match the totals listed at the top.

              That's news to me.

Multiple individuals can leave the same runner on base, but a "team" can only leave a runner on base once.

Ah, I wasn't positive what that "S" was when I looked at it later. I normally call a sac "SH" just to differentiate it from "sacrifice fly." Thanks, looks like I'll have to change that then!

I didn't know it was a bunt until I looked at the BR boxscore for the game. Their PBP shows what kind of sacrifice it is.

LOB is counted for any official at bat where you don't get on. As a sacrifice doesn't count as an at bat, LOB wouldn't be included for that plate appearance.

What about a fielder's choice? And wouldn't a sacrifice fly still consider the players that didn't move over as runners LOB as well?

A sac fly is only counted when a runner scores. So hitting a fly ball to RF and a runner moves up from 2nd to 3rd is not considered an official sacrifice fly. Fielder's choices are also official at-bats. Hitters don't get credited for LOB for walks, HBPs, sac bunts or sac flys because those are not counted as official at-bats

Conclusion? The individual LOB statistic is pretty much useless.

Yeah, as p_rushing said, it only applies to official at-bats.

LOL, I wouldn't say that much, but I guess you could look at it as a more refined/detailed BA RISP stat.

I always said, the more metrics, the better LOL
