Crossing my fingers for a Ludwick and Ubaldo trade to the Indians.

Ludwick seems like almost a lock at this point. Ubaldo...well, we'll see. We definitely have the pieces but I don't know how much the Rockies are asking for.

Good deal. The Tigers didn't cave in and give up Turner or any key big league pitchers while pulling this off. Gonna miss Wells a little, but I'll get over it. And the loss of Martinez may sting, but it'll be a moot point if Castellanos develops into a good player at 3B.

The Dodgers asked the Yankees for Ivan Nova and a catching prospect, which was a non-starter for New York:

The Phillies asked the Twins about Jim Thome :

The Rangers are pursuing Matt Thornton, and the White Sox want Derek Holland in return:

The Red Sox talked to the Athletics about a possible trade for starter Rich Harden and outfielder Josh Willingham, but it's unclear whether the deal currently has a pulse:

At first thought, I am not happy with the Fister deal. I don't know to much about Martinez (BA had him as Tigers 4th best prospect in November) or Furbush. Casper has never awed me and looks like a 4th outfielder.

Would of much rather moved Vargas. Oh well, hope these guys turn out.

Martinez is said to be highly-regarded, Furbush projects as a nice back-of-the-rotation guy, and Wells brings some speed and versatilty (can play all OF as far as I know), but as you said is more of a 4th-OF type.

He may have cost them the game the other night in the loss to SF, taking an unnecessary chance to dive at a ball at a point in the game where you play safe, for example.

Don't just refute the point by saying "No". Your H.S. debate team wouldn't stand for it.

But it doesn't matter today. Pence will be in RF and Brown will be on the bench where he belongs this season.
I'd MUCH rather have Brown in LF than Ibanez. Ibanez' noodle arm is beyond awful.

If you want Brown on the bench, fine. I'm glad you're not making decisions. You could "do without" Brown at age 23 -- here is a little comparison

                        Player A (age 23) 209 PA

                        .246/.335/.393

                        Player B (age 24) 152 PA

                        .239/.322/.373

"Wells, 26, is hitting .257/.323/.451 in 125 plate appearances for the Tigers. A right-handed hitter, Wells can play all three outfield positions. Prior to the season, Baseball America ranked Wells 19th among Tigers prospects, explaining that 'his holes at the plate will limit him to being a role player in the big leagues.'"

"Furbush, a 25-year-old rookie, has a 3.62 ERA in 32 1/3 innings this year, mostly in relief. This year at Triple-A he posted a 3.17 ERA, 10.2 K/9, 2.7 BB/9, and 1.2 HR/9 in 54 innings. Baseball America ranked him 26th among Tigers prospects prior to the season, noting that the Tommy John survivor used deception to rack up strikeouts in the minors. Furbush lacks a true plus pitch, according to BA."

EDIT: More on the two, all from Rotoworld.com:

"Wells is a very good defensive outfielder and was holding his own with the bat, hitting .259 with four homers and a .781 OPS over 124 plate appearances before being sent down to Triple-A earlier this month. He profiles best as a fourth outfielder/occasional starter."

"Furbush didn't fare well in his two starts this season for the Tigers but pitched well in a relief role, posting a 3.62 ERA and 1.55 WHIP overall. He also has a nice minor league track record, posting a 3.17 ERA and 61/16 K/BB ratio over 54 Triple-A innings this season. He could wind up being a nice fit at the back-end of the Mariners rotation in a pitcher-friendly home park."

                            Info from Rotoworld on Martinez:

"Martinez, 20, was ranked by Baseball America coming into the season as the Tigers' fourth-best prospect, but he was blocked by Nick Castellanos and thus was viewed by Detroit as expendable. He hasn't been terribly productive in the minors to this point and sports a .279/.316/.402 batting line with seven homers this season for Double-A Erie. He's young for the Eastern League, though, and profiles as a solid regular if he can reach his potential."

So you compare Brown's 2nd year to Utley's first. Let's get a little more fair here:

                              Utley's second yr:

                              .266 .308 .468 .776 (OPS)

                              Brown's second yr:

                              .246 .335 .393 .728

Plus as an outfielder in the last 2 years, Brown has 5 errors and 1 assist in the equivalent of 63 - 9 inning games. And I'm gonna bet there were probably some plays where he was given the benefit of the doubt and he was spared an error.

In his first 2 years, Utley had 7 errors in the equivalent of 80 games as a 2B.

In the last 2 years, Ibanez has 7 assists and 3 errors in almost 240 complete games.

I'm not sayin' the kid is horrible, but if he's a liability in the OF at a time when they need pitching and fielding to help another possible future batting drought, I would rather have received something for him when he's considered to have a lot of upside.
