The fact that it was Todd Hundley with 41 homers completely takes away from Lopez's achievement, in my opinion.

That doesn't make sense. If it was Johnny Bench, how would that make Javy's achievement any different? He hit 42 homeruns as a catcher, more than anyone else in history. Who cares if it was Hundley that he passed?

Lopez gets no respect. Peter Gammons doesn't even mention him in his list of NL players who would have been MVP in the American League. He lists Sheffield , Thome, and Ivan Rodriguez though. I guess a .327 BA, 43 homeruns, and 109 RBIs, while missing a large number of ABs because of Maddux, doesn't mean much.

I didn't say Lopez was bad, but it's not like he broke a respectable record. Any record that Todd Hundley kept at any point of time deserves little respect in my opinion.

A record is a record man, who cares who held it. Todd Hundley was a good catcher offensively that year so he broke the record, so what. Its not like they handed it to Hundley and said "This is a worthless record, here have it".
