Absolutely...just waited for a close call like that to end the game.

The Root-Pittsburgh guys had it right, what a travesty. You have to feel bad for Daniel McCutchen...dude nearly got through 6 innings and was gassed during the last 2 and got the loss because of that joke call.

His explanation is worse than the call.

“I just saw the glove sweep up. I didn’t see the glove hit his leg.”
Should have just said he blew the call, it would have been much better than what he said which kind of makes no sense.

For what it's worth, after watching them show the replay like 8 times on sportscenter, I thought he was safe too. At first I was like "WTF?!?! HE WASN'T EVEN CLOSE TO BEING SAFE!!!" And then I rewound it and watched it back like 5 more times and I was like "Holy ****, he actually might have blown the tag."

Edit: And even from that picture you can't really tell if he actually got him or not. Looking at the replay again on Mike and Mike, I still think it looks like he was safe. Even from the angle that is pretty much right on top of the catcher, it doesn't look like his glove ever made contact with the runner.

Bonifacio now with a 24 game hit streak and the Marlins won 11-2 over the Nats.

And with that call, the Pirates go from tied for first to third in the division.

It sucks for them that they lost, it doubly sucks for them that they got screwed out of a win when they're in a really tight division race.

McKenry, you are taught when your 10 years old about situations like the above. You dont sweep tag!! You plant a hard tag down on the runner and leave no doubt that the runner is out. Don't give the Umpire any reason at all to think otherwise.

But no, you do a hey look at me type sweep tag, upon first look, looks like you gave him an ole, and unfortunately thats all the Ump gets, 1 look.. You blew it, then the Ump blew it!!

Don't take that chance, put down a hard tag, period. If you did that, you may still be playing at this very moment..

That was a disgrace that he was called safe.

Actually, I'm glad the umpire call it as he saw it. Umpires sometimes seem to forget that they have to be sure to see a strike, tag, force, foul, balk, etc. before making the call. The main reason would be that these tend to be irreversible, like whistling a player down or out of bounds in football, or the ball being dropped as opposed to being fumbled. When in doubt, make the non-call.

If he didn't see a tag, I'd much rather he calls the man safe and the Braves go home, than he assumes he just tagged him and calls him out. Imagine if this went the other way: he doesn't tag him, the umpire calls him out, and they keep playing as the Pirates win. I see that being much, much worse than the real situation that played out, but that's just me.

Either way, I don't know how he didn't see a tag. He must've been in poor positioning (though I heard it was on an infield ground ball, not a base hit).

EDIT: Just saw the actual video. What's actually really, really funny about this is that since the batter tripped and fell, I bet he never actually reached first base. If they ended up getting the runner who surrendered second base, then getting a force out at first base, they would have ended the inning with the run not counting.
