To fully understand what a great yr the Giants have had

    Consider the following,

Bonds, Torrealba, Schmidt, & Alou all lost close family members.

Bonds missed a total of 32 games. (and he still hit 45 hr's)

Their ace closer, Nen, has not pitched all season.

They traded away a pitcher who went on to win 21 games for another team.

Half of the regular starting lineup (Durham, Cruz, Grissom, Alfonzo) were not on the team last year.

4 of their starting pitchers spent time on the DL, along with Santiago, Aurillia, Durham & Snow.

Aside from acquiring Ponson (who is only 3-6 w/ Giants) they made no blockbuster deals other than acquiring a few role players (Young, Herges, Hammonds).

Aside from Bonds, nobody hit over .301 (Galaraga in part time duty) or hit as many as 21 hr's (Grissom and Cruz both had 20).

Nobody, Not even Bonds drove in 100 runs. Bonds led the team in RBI with 90, Alfonzo 2nd with 81.

    New manager, new coaching staff.

Yet, they still managed to win 100 games!

And they're just now starting to fire on all cylinder's.

I hope they win the WS so Barry Bonds can get his ring and retire so he can stop crushing the Padres.

Re: To fully understand what a great yr the Giants have had

Before I get into my Giants rant, you as a Padre fan have got to be excited for next year. Anyways...

There were so many un-sung heroes for this team this year. In no particular order...

Brower made a few spot-starts for the team when injuries took their toll, and he was able to go 5 innings and keep things together for the team.

Hermanson has stepped in after being dumped by the Cardinals and earned that number 5 spot in the rotation until the end of the year.

The rock in the bullpen has to be Nathan, batters are hitting under .200 against him. His E.R.A. is under 3 and has 12 wins coming out of the bullpen. Meaning that when he gets into the game, he shuts down the oppisition allowing the team to put up some runs the next half inning.

I didn't even get to Worrell, Correia and Herges.

The one guy who seemingly came up with big hit after big hit, was Pedro Feliz. So many big home runs this year. 16 in just 235 at bats.

It'd be pointless to keep going on, so many players played a huge role in this team making the playoffs. That's really the case with every team about to play October baseball. It's a different hero every day.

Oh yes, I can't forget. Bonds is still Bonds.
