Why does the 60-day DL exist?

I was just wondering if there was any difference between the 15-day DL and the 60-day DL, aside from one being four times longer. Like, does it "cost money" to put somebody on the disabled list, and is the 60-day a better deal or something?

I guess I just couldn't see myself who might take 8-12 weeks to heal to go on such a list, only because if he can come back before 60 days and I want him, I want to be able to activate him as soon as possible.

I understand it for season-ending injuries, but even then you still have to place him back on the disabled list after 60 days are up. Is it that big of a hassle that they can't just use the 15-day DL?

Just wondering. It's like having an eight-seat SUV alongside your two-seat convertible when you're a family of two.

60 day dl takes you off the 40 man roster, 15 day does not.

      That... actually makes perfect sense.

Thanks for such a logical answer. I can't believe I did not know this earlier.

Technically, it just allows you to expand the 40 man roster beyond 40 for the time that the player is injured and on the 60 day DL.
The injured player is not removed from the 40 man and if a player is added while the player is designated on the 40...when he comes off one(or any) player must then be removed from the 40 man to bring it to the proper amount of players.
