When Gonzo booted the double play ball, how many other people out there thought or yelled "1984!" I know I did. Yesterday is a prime example of what its like to be a Chicago sports or more specifically Chicago baseball fan. That was painful, but the sick thing is, It wasn't any more painful that Leon Durham in 1984.
The thing is, I hope people forget about that fan. This poor guy was just doing what everybody does at a baseball game. IF you watch the replay, you'll see EVERYONE went for that ball. It's not this guys fault. Everybody is frustrated, I know I yelled at him, but we're frustrated cuz we just wanna know what the hell it feels like to be in a frickin' world series. As mad as I was, when Gonzo booted that ball, THAT is what crushed me, cuz I could feel it. I could feel us just sinking, I could feel Prior getting tired, I could feel our crappy bullpen ready to mail this one in.
When it's all said and done, congrats to the Marlins and their fans for taking advantage of the error. They still could've caved in, but they didn't. They deserved to win. As for game 7. I really don't know what to think. Part of me admittidly does feel cursed, I mean how couldn't you if you've been a Cubs fan for the last 30 years? But another part of me thinks that yesterday just may have been of purpose to make us feel that much more that the curse is lifted with a win tonight. We got Kerry Wood tonight though, and he has come through when we need it so far. There was a phsycic on TV in Chicago this morning that said 2 things. 1. A Marlins player will have a major injury tonight. 2. The Cubs will win tonight....in extra innings.
I hope she is incorrect on the 1st point, but correct on the 2nd. Either way if the Marlins do manage to come back and win 3 straight games including two at Wrigley against Prior and Wood, then my hats will go off to them. I will feel the pain of a scab that hasn't healed since 1984, but I will root for them as the National League winner in the world series.....and repeat the phrase that has become the mantra for the Chicago sports fan..."There's always NEXT year"...
