Leo Mazzone says Smoltz used pine tar on the ball

During Leo Mazzone's tenure as Atlanta Braves pitching coach, he schooled the terrific trio of JohnSmoltz, Greg Maddux and Tom Glavine. And he might have done a bit more.
In an interview with SiriusXM radio, Mazzone revealed Smoltz used pine tar to doctor baseballs when he pitched.

Said Mazzone: "One time Smoltzy had it on his shoes and I said, 'John, you can't keep bending over and touching your shoes all the time. Let's put it someplace else!' "
During his 21-season major league career, Smoltz was 213-145 with 3.33 ERA and 154 saves. Twenty of those seasons were spent with the Braves, with whom he won the 1996 NL CyYoungaward. In that season, Smoltz led the NL in wins (24), strikeouts (276) and innings pitched (253 2/3) while posting a 2.94 ERA.
Mazzone didn't mention any other Braves pitchers by name, but hinted that the cheating wasn't an isolated event.
"I know that in my little ball bag I had firm grip and all kinds of goodies to take care of a baseball to get a little more movement on it," Mazzone told SiruisXM.
Mazzone was the team's pitching coach from 1990 to 2005.

why would he feel the need to come out like this?

what, none of those guys have been linked to steroids, so someone has to find some other way to call them out for cheating?

They all do, and always have. Look at the rim of their hats. Pine tar when they touch them.

No different than a batter using it IMO. Really people.

He wasn't really calling him out. He was just doing an interview, recalled some of the tricks of the trade, and happened to use Smoltz as an example. Non-story here IMO.

                  Agreed.

This is common, and IMO, NOT CHEATING!

No different than being allowed to blow into your hands on cool days, or a batter using pine tar for grip on the bat.

definitely not cheating, however there's a Rule which prohibits application of foreign substances to a baseball, resulting in 10 game suspension if caught.

I'm sure Smoltz has no problem with serving the suspension.

The sooner everyone comes to the realization that cheating in baseball is as old as baseball itself we'll all be better off.
As Shaquille O'Neal left the Suns practice court, he yelled out, "Alvin's the coach. We must be the Clippers. And I must be Olowokandi. Nooooo!"

Was I the only one who thought this was legal?

I don't mean rubbing it every time between pitches, but if you had it on your fingers before hitting the mound... no biggie.
