    Re: Salary cap

I'm not an NBA fan so can someone give me a quick rundown on what their Salary Cap is? I know the NFL cap and agree it would really change the game in a bad way. However, I hate the state of baseball today. I'm a Pirate fan and know starting each season that there is no chance in hell that my favorite team will be in the playoffs, let alone compete in the division.

As far as baseball ever instituting a salary cap. I doubt it. Not even if the Yanks sweep FL in 4. The Players Union has WAY too much power and will never agree to something that will hurt their own. It's unfortunate, but it's reality. I have no idea what it'll take for this to change though...

      Re: Salary cap

All i know about the NBA is that it's a soft cap with a luxury tax when you go over the cap and um....it gets more complicated However there is more leeway to spend money with the NBA cap. There's also a "salary floor" (um I think I got that right) where a team HAS to spend a certain amount of money on their rosters.

As for what would make MLB institute a Salary Cap 3 things:

      1) A REAL commissioner probably a Bob Costas or someone of that ilk who can command attention yet also knows the game of baseball.

      2) Fans stop going to games and postseason ratings go down substantially (as they have been the last few yrs tho this year was a blip)

      3) The US gov't taking away the anti-trust exemption that MLB has been enjoying for DECADES! This would allow MLB to actually see the reality of their problems and run the league like a league and not a "club".
