I could only tolerate an NBA cap.

Yea, and NFL style cap would completely change everything. NBA style would be better because things would still be pretty much the same, but every team can compete.

            Re: Salary cap

Teams like the Yanks, Mets, Dodgers, Red Sox..etc having a financial advantage creates a storyline when the poorer teams chase them for titles, so an NFL cap is a bad idea. I think 125 million is a good cap, personally. And frankly, I think it would keep the rich teams from doing some truly stupid things... I mean, I'm sure all of us have spent money stupidly just because we had it to spend.

I look at the Giambi signing as an example of when the free agency issue got out of hand, and a salary cap suddenly became a necessity. The Yanks overpaid for him (when the A's had a very good offer on the table already) just to keep him from remaining an A. It was 60/40, let's take him away from them rather than let's get him for our team. Now he's batting 7th and DHing.

Steinbrenner has a propensity for keeping over-paid 'name' players on his roster. With a cap in place it would probably force his hand to use his minor leaguers more and/or non-name players. I actually don't see this 'restriction' hurting the skanks in any way, unfortunately. If anything, it would probably validate their frequent victories because their use of the wallet would be minimized. That is until Jeter and those other MFers get too old to win championships anymore.

I sure hope there isn't a strike. I think the system and the new CBA will work out well in the long run. 3 or 4 years from now you will actually get to see some favorable results. I heard we're coughing up $55 million this year because of the CBA, that's a lot! We can't afford to do this every single year. It will take it's toll, and of course overpaying our players certainly doesn't help the cause either. I'm more for home-bred players, with an occasional superstar or two from the FA.

Ok '94 was ill timed but under no circumstances should you lose the WS due to crap like that.

I was watching a show the other day and they were discuessing CBAs and such. I think an NFL cap WOULD be good for MLB. Sure it would probably signal the end to trading as we know it but it will increase Free Agency.

The NFL Owners when they implemented their cap wanted a hard cap but the players wanted Free Agency which they never had before. So they agreed on that. The NFL cap has brought so much parity into the NFL that that's one of the reasons why everybody WATCHES. No one knows from year to year who's going to win the SB. You need that kind of element of unknown in MLB.

I'm not an NBA fan so can someone give me a quick rundown on what their Salary Cap is? I know the NFL cap and agree it would really change the game in a bad way. However, I hate the state of baseball today. I'm a Pirate fan and know starting each season that there is no chance in hell that my favorite team will be in the playoffs, let alone compete in the division.

As far as baseball ever instituting a salary cap. I doubt it. Not even if the Yanks sweep FL in 4. The Players Union has WAY too much power and will never agree to something that will hurt their own. It's unfortunate, but it's reality. I have no idea what it'll take for this to change though...
