    Ron Washington's Pre-Game 7 Speech

Little glimpse into clubhouse life. I'm not surprised at this at all. It goes to show that you perceptions or what believe you know about somebody can be completely wrong because what they give to the media and show on camera is usually different then the way they are behind closed doors.

NSFW in anyway what so ever.

Before Game 7 of the World Series, Texas Rangers manager Ron Washington explained to the media that no grandiose pep talk was necessary to rally his team. Turns…

Edit: Nice typo on the title. I'm such a numbnuts.
Thanks to whichever mod fixed that.

I don't get it. Sounded exactly how I'd expect it to (aside from the audio quality sounding like it was recorded by R2-D2 submerged in water). How does this clip contradict anybody's perceptions? Are there pollyannas out there who think that 99.9% of athletes/coaches don't curse?

It contradicts my personal perceptions of Ron Washington himself, not what I think of 99.9% of athletes/coaches. My perceptions are built around what I knew and learned about him while he was a base coach for the A's for 9 years. Obviously my perceptions of Wash run different then other peoples and he isn't just some generic analog manager of a random sports team.

Are you trying to imply that 99.9% of athletes/coaches talk that way in the clubhouse? Sure an F bomb here, a $hit/damn there, but calling the other team a bunch of cocksuckers goes a little further then I think most people do.

Pretty much, yeah. With the exception of Harold Reynolds and Ernie Banks, every player, coach, media member I've ever met swore like a sailor whenever they weren't in "public". And most of them had horrible things to say about other people in their industry. Dusty Baker makes Wash sound like Tim Tebow. Willie Mays is the most foul-mouthed man on the face of the earth.

That is what I said in my OP, they are not the same person that they are to the media or in front of a camera.

Apparently you've spent time in clubhouses but most people aren't lucky enough to meet people like Harold Reynolds, Ernie Banks, Dusty Baker and Willie Mays so most of the population won't have an accurate grasp of clubhouse activities. Maybe that's why you don't get it, you have a different view then most. I'm speaking from a fan's perspective.

Not in clubhouses, per se, though I've met a fair number of people through EA and know some in the sports media. Even as a fan, it doesn't surprise me, but maybe that's because I'm almost 40 and have been following sports forever.

But yes, you're correct that the vast majority of people within the sports world have a separate "on-camera" persona. A lot more athletes have substance abuse problems than most fans think. And the number of married athletes who don't cheat on their wives are a small, small minority.

Yeh, it's all about politics and maintaining an image...Charles Barkley's statements about athletes being role models is generally accepted by all professional athletes but probably due to a guilty conscience rather than the real (necessary) fact that parents should be the role model. I'm sure many fans would loathe their prized hero if the "mask" was taken away.

Minus Aaron Rodgers. I don't care if he has to eat babies to play the way he's been playing. He just needs to keep it up.

Anyways, I liked the clip. But then again, there's a lot of hyperbole going on in here with overstatements and what not... Of course a grown group of testosterone charged males aren't going to have the cleanest mouths on the block, in a locker room with no females. Any setting with all males (or all females, for that matter) the way they act is completely different.

It's nice to hear it, but at the same time I am disturbed that someone recorded it and put it out there like that. What happens in the clubhouse stays there.

Seriously, whoever put that out there needs to be slapped. I'm not listening to it because I don't want it to change my perception of Wash. I don't need to know what is said in the locker room. All I want is for them to go out and play Rangers baseball.

If you've ever played sports, been in the military, etc, I doubt it will change your perception of him. I listened out of curiosity over what the fuss was about and, while I personally don't curse as much, after 10 years in the military I didn't find it shocking or disturbing.

In fact, the one impression I got from it (noting, of course, that it's a very small sample) is that the Rangers seem to have a pretty tight clubhouse and the players like and respect their manager.

BTW, I'm not advocating it being leaked or saying you should listen (I agree that's something that should stay in-house). I'm only saying that nothing from it is really a big deal.

I wouldn't be shocked by anything that is said or done in the locker room. Anyone who has ever been in one should know that. I remember guys pissing on each other in the shower after football practice. For the record I never was involved. The worst i did was throw handfuls of soap on guys after they got out. Locker rooms are pretty much the raunchiest place on earth. Ask Larry Lesters buttcheeks.

I wouldn't read too much into Washington calling the Cardinals' mf-ers. It's just another way to fire up your own team. Sometimes it's an appeal to your pride..."You're going to let those so-and-so's come in here and dictate to us, take away what we've worked our tails off for? LET'S GO KICK THEIR BEHINDS!"
