    New Uniform Number Code?

Possible new uniform number code. What are your views on the MLB implementing this? It's not official yet, but it was a small wrinkle in the new CBA that has yet to be voted on.

    From ESPN.com and uni-watch.com

"Any big leaguer who wants to change uniform numbers without switching teams better give eight months’ notice unless he’s willing to buy warehouses full of his overstocked jerseys. …

Players must tell the commissioner’s office by July 31 of the preceding year if they want a new jersey. That is, unless ‘the player (or someone on his behalf) purchases the existing finished goods inventory of apparel containing the player’s jersey number.’ As in, every replica jersey, jacket, T-shirt, mug and anything else with a number that’s anywhere in stock."

In a way I think that's a good idea. Nowadays with sports we don't have that strong brand identifier with players as they move around so much so the only thing left to brand a player as an entity is their uniform number.

So it makes sense what MLB wants to do.

Like I said earlier, does it really matter if the league loses money over Jon Jay changing his number so Rafael Furcal can wear #15? There aren't warehouses full of Jon Jay regalia. Also, how many times do superstar players change their numbers, unless they change teams, in which their old shirseys are useless anyway?

I agree this is a non issue. Superstars are the only ones that this would apply to, and most change the number to what they want when they switch teams initially.
