Re: Jason Varitek to annouce retirement on Thursday
The only man to play in the Little League World Series, College World Series, World Series, Olympics, and World Baseball Classic. The only Red Sox player to punch ARod in the face. The most postseason games in Red Sox history. The only player in MLB history to catch 4 no-hitters. So long, Captain. The memories have been amazing.Boston Red Sox

Def a hall of famer IMO. I hope he does come back to work with the sox as a catching coach since he was one of the best behind the plate.Comment

Re: Jason Varitek to annouce retirement on Thursday
I have no love lost for any member of the Red Sox but Jason Varitek is a guy I have immense respect for. I definitely think his number should be retired and I think he has a future in the coaching ranks or maybe even being a manager for a team in the future if he pursues it as I think he's one of the more intelligent and knowledgeable players in the game.

Re: Jason Varitek to annouce retirement on Thursday
I remember the day this happened like it was yesterday. This will forever be the defining moment of Varitek's 15 career for me.
Happy to see he is expected to stay with the Red Sox in some capacity.
Funny tidbit about the trade that landed Varitek. Dan Duquette the Boston GM at the time they traded for him and Derek Lowe for Heathcliff Slocumb. Only pulled the trade off because he thought Derek Lowe was a lefty. That trade sure did pan out for the Red Sox in the long run.Last edited by areobee401; 02-29-2012, 12:38 PM.Comment

Duquette originally wanted Ken Cloude for Slocumb, straight up. Seattle refused since Cloude was a dominating, can't miss prospect. They offered Varitek/Lowe instead. Cloude required Tommy John surgery shortly after and never recovered.Member of The OS Baseball Rocket Scientists AssociationComment

Re: Jason Varitek to annouce retirement on Thursday
Not a hall of famer but possibly will be remembered in Red Sox nation. He's a good catcher I'll admit but not elite or great.
And yeah that moment with him and A-Rod... not good. Why did I move here? I guess it was the weather.Comment
