The Florida Marlins ownership have been in talks with Dade County/Miami mayor Alex Penelas about getting a new ballpark built. The mayor and county officials are willing to help build a new ballpark if the Marlins ownership agree to change the team's name to the Miami Marlins. This has been agreed upon by Loria.
The plan has the Marlins and county officials putting up $210 million for the new ballpark which would end up costing $325 million plus land costs. The stadium would be a 38,000 seat retractable roof park set to open in 2007 under the plan. County officials and Marlins officials are at the moment looking for a site for the future stadium.
There is a potential holdup as the additional $125 Million may have to come from the state. In 2000 Governor Jeb Bush had vetoed a plan that would take money from cruise taxes. This time around Bush is willing to help Miami depending on the price tag. (funny how winning can change someone's views
