Bonds wore 24 while he was with the Pirates. When he came to the Giants, he had to change his number.

Ding ding ding, most players I would almost guarantee wear #24 in honor of Robinson, its Jackie's number reversed out of respect. A lot of players past and present did this.
Bonds wore #24 to start his career to honor his Godfather, Willy Mays, and switched to #25 because Willy's number is retired for the Giants.

Players past that wanted to honor Jackie could wear 42. The number hasn't been retired all that long. It was done for Mays.

And the OP stated Bonds wore 24 with the Giants.

Yes, players could wear 42, but many didn't, out of respect, as in nobody should wear it, and thus wore 24. Many players did this, or are still doing this. Heck, one past player Eric Young wore 21 because it was half of 42.
I realize some players probably wear 24 for Mays, but also realize some probably wear 24 for Robinson being the number reversed.

I think the bottom line is a lot of players wear it to honor someone else, and there are plenty of people that could be honored by wearing the number. Mays and Robinson the most, but then those that honored them were pretty good and worth honoring also (like Griffey).
