What's the latest on Bonds? He didn't seem all that excited to be playing at the end of last year. Didn't he threaten to retire?

      <hr /></blockquote><font class="post">

I don't exactly remember him threatening to retire, but he said it was on my mind. Last season was just an emotional strain on him because of the health of his dad. Fore pretty much the first half of the year, Bonds' thoughts were on taking care of his dad. Baseball was completely secondary to him at that point. He even said that he would sleep by his dad's bed, go the park and play, then come home and take care of his dad again. Then his father died, and that hurt him a lot. Bonds said he plays baseball for two people: his father and his god-father. So it was definately a tough season for him.

As for Vlad coming to San Francisco. I would love to see him in rightfield for us next year, but I really really doubt it. The roster situation for the Giants is really bad right now. They're dropping the payroll maximum by about $7M, so they're looking at having about $8M maximum to fill in six spots I believe. I don't think McGowan likes the ideas of breaking the bank big time this year to have Vlad on his team. Plus, if they wait a year, the Giants could probably put out a lethal lineup in 2005. Next year's projected free agent class is much stronger than this year's.
