I don't get the Harper hate. Sure the kid appears arrogant thanks to many media stories i.e. the kiss-blowing story where the opposing team's part leading up to it was conveniently left out. But there are players just as bad or far worst than Harper at a much more mature age.

Sure it doesn't help that he happens to be in your division, but the irony is just overflowing now. I know some Philly fans were pretty cool at the game I went when they were here, but some certainly had few choice words about the Padres and the level of competition that team was, so yeah, there's that as well.

Me neither. Many baseball people have commented on how different he is just from a year or so ago. I get the impression that the Bryce Harper now wouldn't have been a part of the kiss-blowing deal. I think he's great to watch. In fact, I'm going to exchange my Reds-Cubs rainout tickets from last week for this upcoming Friday's game between the Reds and Nats specifically just to see him play.

I think his mohawk looks stupid but other than that I agree with you. I hope the Nats do well.

Hamels needs to be suspended. There's no place in the game for this crap.

"I was trying to hit him. I'm not going to deny it," Hamels told news reporters.

It was a stunning bit of candor from a starting pitcher.

Even when the most obvious of purpose pitches are delivered, a pitcher goes into his best bit of acting, using phrases like "ball got away" or "just trying to throw inside" with the hope of avoiding a suspension or fine.

It's baseball. Who cares? He threw at him intentionally, and Harper made them pay for it. He didn't go for his head or anything, it was just a welcome to the big leagues moment.

No harm in what Hamels did, I've seen it plenty of times where a big time pitcher tries to send a message to a young phenom by hitting him. And Harper handled it like a champ, then stole home. No harm, no foul.

Hamels never backs down from anything. This goes back to when he used to post on the ESPN forums way back in his high schools. Just a couple of weeks ago he ripped the Padres organization to shreds for the sorry state it's in, since he grew up rooting for them and probably still is a fan of his hometown team.

He may have intentionally hit him, but wasn't the great Randy Johnson also well-known for buzzing rookies inside? Unless I am mistaken, I remember he buzzed Sean Burroughs inside when Burroughs first faced him. As long as he did not drop his glove looking to fight the guy like some other pitcher we know, all is well.

Harper is 19 and playing @ a high level in the big leagues already, I think everyone should just respect that, appreciate it, and stop dwelling on whatever petty complaints they have. Yea he's cocky or whatever, but if you're a freaking 19 major leaguer you need to find an edge somehow.

The Phillies have looked old and the minors are bare, but the same folks clowning others for jumping to conclusions on Pujols are condemning the Phillies. They've always been a 2nd half team, and last year's reg season success was an enigma compared to years past.
