    What's wrong with baseball??

This is the most screwed up sport I have ever witnessed! Now don't get me wrong, I love baseball, I play two video games, baseball(ASB or MVP) and madden. That's it, no more. However, when speaking of baseball, just think of anything logical, and baseball will do the exact opposite. Where do I start:
    1. One team can spend as much as $150 million on payroll, while another spends $30 million. Oh but wait, they fixed that by forming a new CBA which allowed for revenue sharing, so what happens...Tampa Bay reduces their payroll another $10 million. And this season, Milwaukee will reduce theirs by $10 million. When will baseball realize this sport needs a HARD cap that stops teams from buying their way into competitivenes, and a floor too, so that teams do not just pocket the shared revenue. Now don't give me the Marlins and their $40 or $50 million payroll. No question they have great young pitching. But as long as teams are forced or allowed to have $30 million payrolls....Tampa Bay will never be competitive, Milwaukee either, nope, that's right count Pittsburgh out of the world series again. Who?? Ahh that's right, Detroit, too.
    2. Let's decide the homefield advantage of the most important series of the entire season with an exhibition game. This is the stupidest thing I have ever heard in my life, I still can't believe it happened! So many guys work their asses off for an entire year, and most for an entire career to get to the World Series, and you start in a hole because your league's All Star team lost the All Star game?? Stupidity! This has to be the biggest knee jerk reaction I have ever witnessed when they made this rule all because of an 11 inning game that could not be finished due to teams using all their pitching.
    3. Drug and steroid testing. It's an absolute joke. The players say, we're not using steroids, but none of them want steroid testing. Do you smell fish also? Okay, I may have experimented with drugs so few times that you could count it on one hand, but if you asked me to take a drug test of any sort, I would in a heartbeat. Why? Because I know I don't use drugs or steroids. By the way.....to their credit, some kind of half *** drug and steroid testing has been implemented this past season, although I think its a complete joke still. But the point is, anyone see a 50 homerun hitter this season?? Me neither. When 50 HR's was beginning to be a regular feat in the past few seasons, once a somewhat better steroid testing program comes along, the 50 HR season mysteriously dissappears.
    4. The Umpires. How many times do you see the umpires get into an argument with a player, or manager? Yea me too, at least once or twice a game. Have you ever seen an NFL official argue and get right in the face of a coach or player?? Me neither. What about basketball? Hockey? Tennis? That line judge called the ball out, the player disagrees, the line judge comes out, and throws him off the court?? Nah, thats right, I've never seen it either. Why do umpires have to act like their God's on the baseball diamond. Their like apt land lords, God's of their community.

I could continue to go on and on....but I have the madden shakes, I must ease the pain and play.

    I'm out.

          Re: What\'s wrong with baseball??

Okay. I'll bite on this one.

          1. As far as your first point, you're wayyyy over simplifying things. What you're not taking into consideration is that the players have one of the strongest (if not the strongest) union in the US. They have the ability to dictate the way MLB structures its pay. And they are dead opposed to a salary cap, due to the fact that it would cause lower salaries and a halt to the rise of salaries.

Until the MLBPA realizes that it's stance is way too strong, then Baseball will have to consider creative ways around the issue, hence the luxury tax.

          2. At one point, earlier this season, I would have agreed with you that having the All-Star Game decide home field advantage for the WS was a horrible idea. But, since this past offseason, I changed my stance to "Who cares?"

First, let's realize that the public was in outcry over the tied ballgame and were adamant that baseball figure a way to make the players play hard and want to be there. Well, it's been done. The game seemed important, although I really didn't see a big diffence in the way it was played. However I did see a difference in the way one of the teams managed the game.

But, as far as 'Home Field Advantage', I don't see the big deal. Florida clinched in New York, Chicago and San Francisco. Chicago clinched in Atlanta. Boston clinched in Oakland. The way it looks this year, the home team didn't have much of an advantage in the deciding games.

And more importantly, when given the decision of going to New York to make up a game with the Mets, if it was the deciding factor between home field between the Giants and Braves, the Giants elected to either forfeit the game, or leave the starters at home and play reserves. Why? Because home field didn't mean anything to the players.

The way I see it, if it doesn't matter to them, why should it matter to me.

          3. Steroid testing needs to be done, and it's begining to be done, so you're argument of it being an "absolute joke" is not completely accurate. It's being implemented, but again you fail to realize the Union's leverage in the matter.

You would think that the union would be more concerned with the players health than anything else, but that doesn't seem to be the case. Especially, when the player's don't care.

          4. Umpires. Here I agree completely with you. Umpires are totally out of control.

Can you explain why the strike zone you call has to be "Your Strikezone" and not the one in the rule book?

And as far as confrontations, this is where I pull my hair out. Most of you probably don't know, but the Cardinals have filed a complaint against Umpire Jerry Crawford. The situation arose when he was leaning on Mike Matheney during play. Now, anyone who has ever caught, knows that the umpire is usually in contact with the catcher, but it's usually not enough to alter anything. But, in this instance, Matheney felt that the leaning was affecting his ability to get to some outside pitches, so he asked Crawford if he would stop. Crawford responded, "I've been here a lot longer than you have and I've always done it this way. Deal with it." Which caused an argument between the two and resulted in the ejection, and subsequent suspension of Matheney, LaRussa and Dave Duncan.

And the kicker, there's a video of Crawford, right after the ejections, winking at the third base umpire as if to say, "Got 'em."

          ---

All in all, I think baseball is much better off than most will give it credit for. People want to bash Selig, but he's not as incompetent as most would believe.

He's the only commissioner to avoid a work stoppage facing the end of an agreement. He's the first to implement any type of payroll limits. And he made the All-Star game interesting. (But, did it ever really matter that it ended in a tie? Apparantly to some)

Baseball is the only sport that doesn't tinker with it's rules year to year. It doesn't have to. When called correctly, it's the greatest, most perfect game ever imagined. And the ease that people have at jumping all over Baseball for whatever reason, drives me insane.

I guess it's just fasionable to rip the sport and it's commissioner. But may I ask what it is that people want?

Do you want complete parody like the NFL, where veterens and star players can't stay on one team their entire career due to salary cap restricions? Does the NBA and the NFL keep thier players from using steroids and other illegal drugs? Aren't all professional athletes overpaid?

Baseball isn't perfect. But what professional sport is?

                Re: What\'s wrong with baseball??

I apoligize for not stating my entire background and knowledge of the sport of baseball. Yes, I'm very aware of the players' union and how strong it is. The Union, that you say I am forgetting about, is part of baseball. And my topic was about the things I don't like about baseball. Anyways, I agree with you, a big part of what's wrong with baseball, is the players' union. But, the owners let them have their way too many times in the past, that's how their strength was built.

I don't care if baseball itself doesn't care about homefield advantage, I still think its the stupidest thing I have ever heard, and soon, it won't even be mentioned with the all star game. I could easily say I don't care about any of these issues, bottom line is, baseball is full of ill-logical thoughts, rules, and uhh, stuff.

Finally, steroid testing...if you call it that. You know its only random testing, and they test about 3% of MLB. Of course there are rules that if positive testings are found, then they will up the testing, but I'm sure the players' union has already warned players. So yes, 3%...I'd say that's an "absolute joke".

But hey, on the bright side....we do agree with umpires! Friends??

Oh I hope we're friends. Being a baseball fan, it's tough to find anyone to talk to that knows anything or even cares enough to talk about the issues.

So, yeah I like you based on that alone.

And I do agree that "Home Field" in the WS being decided upon the outcome of the All-Star game is a bit silly...heck it's all out silly, but you know what? The so-called 'fans' that we're absolutely offended that the game before ended in a tie, that they demanded something be done to make the game "important". Well, is home field advantage important enough for you?

Bottom line, the game ended in a tie and those of us true fans didn't care because it was JUST AN EXHIBITION!!!

Anyway, I just want to apoligize if I came off the wrong way. It seems as though casual obervers have started to rip baseball because it seems like the 'in' thing to do. People rip baseball, say it's boring, it's this, it's that and then they don't know anything about it to make those statements. So, forgive me if I get my feathers ruffled a bit from time to time.

I've always said that there are 3 reasons why someone doesn't like baseball:
                      -Never watched/played it
                      -Haven't attempted to understand it
                      or
-Aren't smart enough to understand it

And that's my honest opinoin on the matter.
