    It's about time...

    MLB expands steroid testing.

It seems there have been some bad boys in the MLB, now they can kick the MLBPA in the pants for once.

    Congrats on the 700's post...

As for the steriod testing, will this effect all major league baseball players? Or is it simply going to be a "random test" sort of thing. This test will be effective if :

    1. Its totally random - different times of the year. Old drug test systems were always at the beginning of the year (NFL), the players could simply "time" things.

    2. Nobody is safe. Random testing.

    3. Harsh Penalities. If they can get the MLBPA (its going to be hard), to back 15-20 game suspensions for steriods, I think that will be a good thing.

Overall, I think that this is going to be great for the game. Anyone who says that the recient home run spike isn't due to steriods is absolutely crazy. Maybe we'll get back to some smallball like the 80's cardnals teams.

From what I got out of the article, the testing is random (all players). I'm not sure about when these tests are administered. The penalties appear to be pretty pathetic, which is too bad.

1st offense is treatment, no fine, and no suspension??? Like that is going to stop somebody (or even make them think about stopping).

          Anyway, it's a start...

Not to Rile anyone here, but what if people from even smallball teams were found to use sterroids? You just don't know, and you can't just discern just because one group of people hits more homers than the other. Thats just not fair to the players, let alone fair at any rate to any human being.

For another thing, I would hope that the response to the discoveries of sterroid abuse would not be anger, confusion, or disgust, but rather understanding, worry, hope, and if necessary hurt. The point of my saying this is that lately people in America have it out to victimize everyone and everything, and it's always been pretty popular to victimize famous people. Look at Michael Jackson, Pee Wee Herman, the deaths of Elvis and John Lennon, even possibly the recent death of a young Reds outfielder who never even had a chance. Most of these people were once seen as "Kings", later shot down in their prime and victimized and shown to the public as "horrible people"....lay down the viscious vengeful swords and start hoping and praying and UNDERSTANDING that these players probably need alot more help than they do angry fans.

I am just glad they added THG to the banned list. If they had tested for THG, the numbers would have been higher than 5-7%. Remember, there were a few famous players who got subpoenaed to testify about THG use in MLB. Apparently, they got their names from a lab the Feds raided. It will be interesting to see who slims down now - won't that be a telling sign.

I agree that the penalties are not stiff enough. But look at it this way, if a player tests positive, it will taint any accomplishments (including records) they have achieved - thus tainting their career. So, while they may not get hit in the wallet, it could cost them a trip to the Hall of Fame and their fan base - which would be worse than a hefty fine.

I am not an angry fan...I just dislike people who cheat and then take full credit for their enhanced accomplishments. Even professional bodybuilders have dropped the "I just have good genetics" thing.
