    Dick Pound Hammers MLB

    http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=1661791

I for one agree with him 100%

This new "policy" is a complete joke. It's a disgrace to both professional and amateur sports.

Rob Manfred and Gene Orza, union officials have declared that the recent "5-7%" results are proof that there IS NOT a drug problem in baseball!

Guess what guys, it doesn't matter if the figure is 1% or 99%, DRUGS ARE BAD MMMKAY?

    I'm disgusted.

My point exactly. And the thing to remember here is, this is strictly a steroid test. This isnt a drug test. And nope, they weren't tested for the THG. Let's be honest, THG wouldn't be so big if there weren't people using it. And since it costs about $20,000 for a dose or whatever you call it, you can bet that high profile and high paid athletes are using it. Not too mention, the players knew when the testing was going to take place. This is an absolute joke. I bet if you randomly tested these players for drugs, steroids and THG...I bet you would find at least a 20% are using them. But with this ridiculous testing, they'll never crack down on it. I'm sure the players' union will fight it if they did find someone positive for steroids, they'd find some loop hole to fight the penalty. Of course, what is the penalty?? Oh yea, mandatory treatment the first offense. What the F ever! I could see it now.....Barry Bonds creeping up onthe homerun record, and he's tested positive for steroids, gets treatment, then breaks the record. What a joke!

          Exactly.

That scenario (though i believe bonds is clean personally) would be death for MLB.

"Treatment" for knowingly breaking the rules?

          Give me a break.

They had a report on this very topic with Pound as one of the ppl interviewed on the CBC. Everyone said that it's a complete joke and that even if this mandatory testing goes on it's still not comprehensive enough. It may be random but it's not happening all year long. Pound and others also scoffed at the fact that the "penalties" aren't even close to being adequate.

The report also made mention that Europe is a LOT better then North America as they've had an anti-doping code in place for years. The athletes are tested randomly and all year. It was also mentioned that with amateur sports and the IOC the penalty for the first time can go as high as being banned from the sport for 2 years.

One person said straight out that if athletes really care about their health and such this should be seperate from any Collective Bargaining. Of course this would never happen as the pro sports unions are far too powerful.

                It's a shame.
