Re: Mike Trout or Bryce Harper

I love the "Best player in baseball" comment... each time. We've had Matt Kemp shoved down our throats for a month or so, then Josh Hamilton...am I missing anyone else given the label here on OS? Hell, I should've given that title temporarily to Amarista when he slugging the crap out of the ball in that four game stretch.

If I had to pick between the two... it'd be Bryce Harper, but it's way too close at the moment. Trout is hitting very well, his defense and speed have been better than advertised out of 2009 and he'll very well be a player who hits well over .300 in his career, plays great defense, provides at least average-to-above average pop with him hitting more doubles, but while Harper hasn't lit up the world since people expect him to after all the hype, I think he's got the higher ceiling and will turn into the better player. Harper might sniff .300 once in a while, but his defense should be better along with arm and power.

You can look at it this way too. Trout has performed far behind expectations and won't be likely sustain this torrid pace, but there is reason to believe he'll be a very good player for years. Harper has performed well for a 19-year old player, but some would say he's performing below expectations. His current line is right around where Ken Griffey Jr. was in his first season at 19 as well.

You can't go wrong with either player.

Mike Trout has been way better so far. It's really not even close.

As for "best player in baseball", it's hard to tell. Trout has played really well over the first three months, but a hot streak here or a cold streak there and our perceptions of "best player in baseball" can get turned upside down easily. With Pujols being down it seems like the title could move around on a yearly basis. Last year it was probably Matt Kemp; this year it's looking like McCutchen, Votto, Wright, or Trout. There's a bunch of names. We'll see by the end of the season.
      NFL: Indianapolis Colts (12-6)
      NBA: Indiana Pacers (42-13)
      MLB: Cincinnati Reds (0-0)
      NHL: Detroit Red Wings (26-20-12)
NCAA: Purdue Boilermakers (FB: 1-11, BB: 15-12), Michigan Wolverines (FB: 7-6, BB: 19-7, H: 15-10-3)

Not to throw gas on a fire, but I was perusing Trout's stats this morning and realized he has a .410 BABIP right now. That is insane and will obviously not be something he can maintain. He also K's about twice as much as he walks.

Now, before everyone grabs their pitch forks and comes after me, he also is running about a 25% line drive rate that is really driving his BABIP up. What does this mean? That right now he's locked in and hitting things hard, which matches what we see with our eyes. It also means he's more than likely not going to keep it up, but it's fun to watch.

You pretty much defused your own point right here. Guys that consistently make quality contact post high BABIPs. Votto's career BABIP is .357. Of course, that still means that Trout's could drop 30-50 points, but he'll still be a really good hitter.

As for his strikeout rate; yeah he strikes out a decent amount but he doesn't whiff a lot. His SwStr% is a Pujolsian 6.8%, so that basically means he's not seeing the ball well. That will probably change as he gets more experience.

That is a high line drive rate...I don't expect him to keep it up. Maybe he will, but I really don't expect to see him maintain a .410 BABIP. Even if he came down to Votto like numbers, his BA would rally fall.

Trout's in the zone right now.

With his game last night, Trout improved his BA to .354 and he hit HR #15. He also now has 30 steals and has been caught stealing 3 times.

Not bad for a 20 year old.

Yup...love, love watching him play. On a completely different level right now.

Re: Mike Trout or Bryce Harper

Within the basics, Trout is destroying Harper presently in average (50 pts for overall including Trout's rookie numbers) and slugging (100 pts) having played only 40 more games. Is that really enough time to gain that type of lead or is it that Trout just has something about him? I don't get to see him play, so I don't really know overall what he is doing to make him excel not only over Harper, but most of MLB. I have seen Harper play a fair amount and you can't take away from his hustle and determination. Also, I'm taking into account that at this age range, one year makes such a difference in so many ways..... as it did for myself in sports. So I get that factor. Will we see even a closer comparison between them next year with Harper getting the benefit of a full spring training with the team?

The fact that you're so concerned over how this kid acts make you seem crazy/jealous. The kid's 19. He hasn't done anything incredibly controversial, and he's fun to watch. Who didn't enjoy watching him steal home after being beaned?

I know he's got more potential than any Philly player has and will most likely be public enemy number #1 in Philly for years to come, but give him a bit of a break....

Also, I know he's been traded, but how original: http://www.fansedge.com/Philadelphia...476307_PD.html
