Need some help on a rules question

Okay, I've always considered myself to be pretty well versed in the rules of decisions for pitchers.

Last night I was at the A's Orioles game (what an exciting game to be at).

Cook comes in for the A's in the bottom of the eighth with a lead but ends up giving up 2 inherited runs and one of his own and the 8th ends with the score 9-8 Orioles.

The A's come back and scored 6 in the ninth to take the 14-9 lead.

Jerry Blevins enters the game in the 9th, holds on to that lead but then when I went home and checked, he was awarded the win.

Am I missing a rule here?

The only scenerio I have possible considered, albeit, a rather unprecedented one would be that Melvin officially changed pitchers before the A's even batted.

Can anyone help me out? This has been driving me nuts.

Dude...I don't know. Now this is driving me crazy! I looked at the box score and read through the play by play and there doesn't seem to be any reason for Cook not to be the winner. The PBP doesn't state that Blevins became the pitcher until the bottom of the 9th. I thought maybe there was an obscure rule that stated a pitcher couldn't get a BS and a W in the same game, but I don't think there is (I did find something that says you can't get a BS and a W unless you are the home team, but I don't really buy that).

The official scorer makes the final call. Although, it's rare that it happens like this.

"Finally, when the starting pitcher of the winning team does not qualify for the win under rule 10.17, and the relief pitcher who would otherwise qualify for the win pitches "ineffectively" in a "brief appearance", the official scorer may choose to credit a "succeeding relief pitcher" with the win."

I was watching that game as well (on tv) what a heart breaking 9th inning, I knew Jimmy Johnson would eventually mess up one day, but in such an insane manner... the bullpen failed big time last night... hopefully the O's pitching staff play better tonight and the offense just keep playing the same way.

          I was pissed!

Wow. Good to know, thanks for the heads up.

How weird. I've never heard of anything like that.

I was going to state the same thing, but I thought this was only the case if the lead never changed hands. I didn't know this was still the case in a situation like this.

Re: Need some help on a rules question

I knew that if the starting pitcher didn't go five, the official scorer could reward the win to the reliever he deemed most effective and not necessarily the first relief pitcher into the game. I figured it was something similar, but had to look it up.
