Terrible call but it will never be overturned. And Braves' security needs to get the situation under control. Embarrassing.

        Re: Play-In Game Discussion Thread

On the infield fly rule the umpire is to rule whether the ball could ordinarily have been handled by an infielder, not by some arbitrary limitation such as the grass, or the base lines. The umpire must rule also that a ball is an infield fly, even if handled by an outfielder, if, in the umpires judgment, the ball could have been as easily handled by an infielder.
This is the actual rule so I can't really see how they can protest. No rule was broken.

Because the IF fly is a judgment call. Like balls or strikes , safe or out.

If the protest is upheld, they have to wipe out whatever happens next and resume the game from that point.

Are you kidding me? I love it. Let the umpires know what's up. Officials need to be seen and not heard.

True. But that incident at home plate happened quick and it could've been difficult for the umpire to see the tag being applied due to that depending on his vantage point. However, the umpire in this game actually had time to look up in the sky to clearly see that the baseball is travelling well past the infield on the pop fly before making that call.

                    Worst. Call. Ever.

I think the fact that it was called so late gives the protest validity. And the fact that the lf umpire called it, not the 3b umpire. If it's a regular crew, that didn't get called.

                          PROTESTING GAMES.
Each league shall adopt rules governing procedure for protesting a game, when a manager claims that an umpires decision is in violation of these rules. No protest shall ever be permitted on judgment decisions by the umpire. In all protested games, the decision of the League President shall be final.
Even if it is held that the protested decision violated the rules, no replay of the game will be ordered unless in the opinion of the League President the violation adversely affected the protesting teams chances of winning the game.
Rule 4.19 Comment: Whenever a manager protests a game because of alleged misapplication of the rules the protest will not be recognized unless the umpires are notified at the time the play under protest occurs and before the next pitch, play or attempted play. A protest arising on a game-ending play may be filed until 12 noon the following day with the league office.
Just for clarification these are the rules for protesting. Judgement calls cannot be protested.

they can if a rule is violated, which it was as the call was not made until the ball was hitting the ground
