Re: Pirate fans: Bucs will still have many options

Okay, lets see what we've got,
    we'll start with pitching:
the Pirates may not be too quick to try and sign a starting pitcher as they have Kris Benson,Kip Wells,Josh Fogg and Oliver Perez, in house candidates for the fifth starter spot include: Nelson Figueroa, Soloman Torres,Brian Meadows, Ryan Voglesong, Dave Williams and Matt Guerrier,
they do need help in the bullpen, especially the Closer spot, Mike Lincoln had 5 saves for the team last season but is better suited for middle relief, Juan Acevedo was a solid Closer for Detroit in 2002 but fell off the pace last season splitting the season between the Yankees and the Blue Jays,
if the team is going to sign a Closer it will be one of the lower priced, perhaps Antonio Alfonseca, Mike DeJean or Braden Looper,
on the field the Pirates have a few needs as well:1B 3B RF and the bench,at 1B Robert Fick's name has been mentioned before and would be a good signing, at 3B Tatis, Tony Batista and Todd Zeile are all possibilities, Tatis or Zeile can be had a lower price than Batista, in RF Jeromy Burnitz, Brian Jordan John Vander Wal and Troy O'Leary have been mentioned at one time or another, it could be possible for Pittsburgh to sign two of these players, one in Left and one in Right and allow Jason Bay to get more seasoning down in the minors, Tike Redman seems like a lock in Center, at least for now, the bench can be pieced together with minor league signings, as is Craig Wilson Rob Mackowiak and Daryl Ward should have spots on the bench,
it will also be interesting to see who will win the 2B job, will it be Bobby Hill or Freddy Sanchez, both were highly regarded prospects with there former teams, so it should be an interesting battle.

Re: Pirate fans: Bucs will still have many options

I really don't want to see Jason Bay in the minors. He did a more than adequate job last year (didn't he have 6 or 7 RBIs in one game?).

I think Jeromy Burnitz would be a very interesting idea in RF. He certainly could make use of the short porch in PNC. Fernando Tatis is also interesting as an option at third. Of course, almost anyone is a step up from Jose Hernandez.

The bullpen also needs serious work. I see they resigned Beimel to a one year deal. Woo. We need someone who can come in in a tight situation and get a lefty out. That's not Joe Beimel.

I still think we have a potential closer in Solomon Torres. I was advocating him getting the job last year, since he was almost lights-out the first time through the lineup as a starter. He's not afraid to pitch inside, and he has some zip on his pitches. He should definitely get a look there.

I wholeheartedly agree with you, Pitt, on Salomon Torres as the Bucs' closer. He does have nasty stuff and for a short stint he's golden.

            Here's a lineup for you:

            Tike Redman cf
            Freddy Sanchez 2b
            Jason Kendall c
            Jeremy Burnitz rf
            Fernando Tatis 3b
            Jason Bay lf
            Travis Lee 1b
            Jack Wilson ss

A lineup like that would seem attainable. I mean, right now, Abraham Nunez be your opening day 3b. Ugh!

Griffy97 - I'd really like that lineup, but I don't see it happening. Right now I'm a little frustrated with the Pirates so my judgement might be a little jaded, but I don't see Burnitz, Tatis and Lee coming to PGH. Maybe 1 of those guys, but that's about it.

Another rumor I heard was that PGH was in negotiations with Jose Mesa. Looks like he could possibly be our closer last year. A signing like that is 100% useless IMO.

Oh well, I hope DL starts to do something and sign some guys. I know KMac is handcuffing him, but I'd at least like to see some activity. The Ward pickup was a good one IMO. Only a minor league contract so there's nothing to lose. Other than that and the Rule 5 mess, the Pirates have been pretty silent...

Well I think probably the biggest need for the Pirates now is 3rd base. They need someone who can add some pop, and there arn't to many free agents out there.

Here is a list of 3rd base free agent

                              New Team Signing Date Notes

Not a really good list. It looks like it might have to be Mac or maybe Sanchez at 3rd.
