      Haven't heard this either,
Maddux has stated on a few occasions that he did not want to leave the National League,
so i'm not sure why he would sign a 3 year contract with a A.L. team, as a Sox fan i would like to see what he could do in Boston, but don't see him signing,
i think if the Cardinals, Padres or Giants present offers he would likely take one of those over the A.L. one.

I don't see Maddux leaving the NL because he loves to be at the plate, trying to win a game with his bat and not just his arm. But all you people that are bashing on him sayin that he will not be a good pitcher in the AL...remember this...IF he were to go to Boston he wouldn't be expected to win 18-20 games...he would be the 3rd maybe 4th pitcher in the rotation. He is a guarenteed 15 wins every year, when you can get that out of the 3 or 4 spot in your rotation its tough to argue that staff being the best staff in the league.

                        Re: maddux to RED SOX

First of all, I live in NH and I'm pretty up to date on my Red Sox news and rumors and I haven't heard anything of the sort concerning Greg Maddux. And if the Red Sox were not willing to assume Arod's contract I can't see them signing a veteran pitcher nearing 40 to a three year 33 million dollar deal.

If it were to happen (big IF because as others have stated, Maddux wants to stay in the NL, though San Diego is out) it would be a big aquisition for Boston, aside from the money issues. From a business perspective it would be dumb to lock him up for 3 years for that money with their impending free-agent situation coming up at the end of the season (Pedro, Nixon, Lowe, Varitek, Nomar, Ortiz). From a performance stand point though, its a big addition. Pedro and Schilling are the front line for that rotation, they are the guys expected to win 18-20 games with 200+ K's. Lowe is a guy one season removed from a 20+ win season and he is the number 3, and already considered a very good number 3 starter. Tim Wakefield is often underrated and is a very good number 4 starter. He usually alternates between good and not so good seasons so he is due for another good year. Maddux would essentially be the 5th starter in that rotation (though in reality he would probably be viewed as either the number 3 or 4) and thats pretty impressive. This is a guy who will win his 300th game next season and is still very capable of putting up 12-15 wins with a sub 4.00 ERA. In interleague play he has pitched well against AL teams and in AL parks (Fenway particularly as he has had his way with the Sox the last few years the Braves were their designated rivals) and probably would do fine in the AL.

Like I said though, no need in getting excited because I'd say the chances of Maddux pitching in Boston next year are less than 5%, and thats being a little too generous. Expect Byung Hyung Kim or Bronson Arroyo to be the 5th starter for the Red Sox next season and for Maddux to pick up a one year deal with an NL team.
