Re: Terry Franconna on Red So Ownership

Theo Epstein traded for Adrian Gonzalez and signed Carl Crawford following pressure from Boston Red Sox owners to build a “sexy team,” according to a book co-authored by former Red Sox manager Terry Francona. On Nov. 2, 2010, a group gathered at Fenway Park to review results of that $100,000 marketing research project the Red Sox had commissioned following declining ratings of NESN, the regional sports network partly owned by the team. The books stated the marketing report said: “(W)omen are definitely more drawn to the ‘soap opera’ and ‘reality-TV’ aspects of the game … They are interested in good-looking stars and sex symbols” — a reference to All-Star second baseman Dustin Pedroia.
The owners of the Boston Red Sox were preoccupied with sagging TV ratings and hired marketing consultants who urged the team to place a greater emphasis on "good-looking stars," according to an excerpt from a book co-authored by Terry Francona.

That is absolutely ridiculous about Sox ownership.

This is embarassing. Win in more exciting ways? All I can think of is doing backflips while rounding the bases after homeruns

Funny how you get hammered with the idea that teams like the Red Sox are model organizations and all that, but really they are being run like this.

I don't get this. Why is he trashing the organization? I saw something on reddit about how he says in this book that the Red Sox ownership looks at the team as more of a toy than a team, and they aren't fully baseball minded.

Ok? So what? They put an extremely talented team on the field for you to manage, and it didn't work out. I'll have to see this interview, because to me it just sounds like sour grapes. The owners went out and got some great players (Carl Crawford who at the time looked like a great, albeit overpaid signing, and A-Gon). On paper it was a great team. I guess I don't understand the problem. As the owners your job is to put your checkbook on the line and put a team on the field. They did that. What's his problem?

And the book is co-written by Dan Shaughnessy. lolno

At the end of the day, the game is not played on paper. Crawford and Gonzalez simply couldn't handle the pressure of playing in Boston.

Re: Terry Franconna on Red So Ownership

As a diehard Red Sox fan, I think Francona should go all in. He was the best manager we had in years, and it was clear that there were ownership problems. I was sad to see him go but glad to see Epstein go, but Cherington is 10x worse, and Valentine was 100x worse, so they replaced them with terrible choices. This thing is just getting worse now.

                That's not the owner's fault.

The ownership group has turned the place into a giant theme park. dating game reality show, fake sellout streak, commerative bricks, a CD of Red Sox players singing, etc. It's bad experience going to games there now. Shaughnessy is the only media person in this city who is not a Red Sox cheerleader.

I don't get it. I guess I have different expectations for my owners. They can do whatever they want, as long as their checkbook is open and they're willing to pay to put a competitive team on the field. There are MUCH worse owners than the Sox ownership.

Well they got exactly what they wanted, didn't they? The Red Sox have been the epitome of a soap opera for the past two years.

Gonzalez had an .895 OPS in his Boston career and Crawford was hurt to much in 2011 to say that he simply couldn't handle pressure. He played very well in the 30 games last year. But he was hurt, and adjusting to a new team, to say it was just pressure is short sighted.

I don't know how you can defend Boston on this.
