For some teams at least, that's the case. There's others that you just wish were able to spend alot more cause they have a good team, but if they were able to spend the amount that many others did, that team would be good.

Jays for MLB could be example of a team that didn't spend alot, that if they did, they'd be great(as they're trying to prove in 2013).

Leafs in NHL however, are exact opposite. They're showing that even if you can spend one of the most in the league(NHL has a hard cap though), you still won't be good.

Leafs might be biggest proof as to how hard caps(meaning you can't even go past it, no luxury tax or anything, you're simply not allowed passing the limit) can ruin some storied teams. If MLB had a hardcap, don't know if Yankees would ever be the same dynasty team they had before. Same with NBA, if NBA had hard caps, imagine how a team like Lakers or Heat would be. Would be impossible for a NBA team to have 2 franchise guys(making 15+M each) on their team, unless they don't care about depth at all.

Oh yeah. I root for a team that's good but has limited funds. If we could spend like the Dodgers it'd be game over. Frank Wren with unlimited funds is an incredible fantasy, lol.

It could be worse in my eyes. I'm not a big fan of the new extended playoffs or interleague play everyday but its still Baseball. The game at its essence is still the same and it is still the sport I love.

Mostly, yea. Where we are with instant replay is the only thing I can think of that I have a major problem with, but at least there is talk about getting that figured out, we'll see if it continues.

Competitive balance has gotten a lot better. It's not where the NFL is, but the NFL model is so different I don't think its fair to even compare.

Yes, besides the All-Star game deciding home field advantage.

Not the only one, I'm sure there are at least three others out there somewhere.

I'd love standardization too, but I'd like to see both leagues institute the DH.
There are only a handful of pitchers who can legitimately hit at the Major-League level.
So most of the time, it's a wasted at-bat.
It kills me when a team has a rally going, but with 2 outs, and the pitcher on the on-deck circle, everyone knows the 8th guy is getting walked so the pitcher can hack away. It's like I'm watching me wail away up there.

It's not like the old days when every player was an athlete.

Not only that, but games without the DH are normally a lot longer due to pitching changes.

I think eventually the NL is going to the DH, if only for adding more jobs. The PA will push for it eventually.

Because putting something as important as home field advantage in the World Series on the line in an exhibition game, after teams played 162 games and the postseason to get there, makes no sense. The baseball season is more than long enough to determine who should get home field advantage. The fact that a team can win 110 games, have their league lose the ASG, and then lose home field advantage to a team that won 80, squeaked into the playoffs and got hot at the right time is dumb.

I agree. I like how something significant is on the line, but at the same time, I think of all the pro sports, MLB is the only one that has an All-Star game where the athletes all try their hardest.

Also, because of the abundance of inter-league play, I don't think you even need to have home field be every other. Just give it to the team with the best record.

I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure home field advantage was never decided by the team with the better record, it rotated between the AL and NL team each year which is just as arbitrary.

One of the things that makes the LEAST sense in sports is the notion of Home-Field Advantage for anything being decided by anything OTHER than who has the better record of the two teams.

Even ALTERNATING between AL/NL each year was incredibly dumb.

I agree, but I also understand the reasoning for it historically. Essentially, when the leagues were really separate entities (own presidents, etc) and never played each other until the WS, there was nothing that said a 105 win AL team was better than a 96 win NL team since you really didn't know anything about the relative strength of the two leagues.

Today, though, it should absolutely be done by best record.
