Padres and Mariners make a Trade (full list of players)

Padres Get: Cirillo, Pitcher Brian Sweeney and Cash

Mariniers get: Wiki Gonzalez, Kevin Jarvis, Dave Hansen and a Minor Leaguer

This deal is done and will be announced Tuesday.

Cirillo will be the backup to Sean Burroughs but, I dont understand why you pay 6.7 million to a bench warmer?

In further analyzing this deal it does make a lot of sense for the Padres,
yes they pick up a "6.7 million bench warmer", plus a million in cash from the Mariners,
but they unload over 6 million amongst the three players (most notably Kevin Jarvis at 4.25 mil),
it actually saves the Padres money, making this a good deal for them.
for Seattle, this was just a chance to unload a bad contract on a player who's lack of production helped play him out of town.

I love the trade for the Mariners. Anything that gets rid of Cirillo is a GOOD THING.

This also makes room for other trades with the M's. If they so wish, they now have the ability to trade Freddy Garcia or Kevin Jarvis, possibly any of their now 3 Catchers, along with other Trade possibilities. I wouldn't mind having Jarvis on the team, as the way Freddy was heading, Jarvis wouldn't be an improvement, but he wouldn't be that much of a downgrade if you get my point. What next?! did they get Aurillia yet? I don't think so, but in any case, they can now trade one of their pitchers for a Shortstop/backup. GREAT move by the M's, although losing Brian Sweeney over Cirillo may prove in time to be one of the bigger losses the Mariners have had on a list that includes Arod and Griffey. We'll just have to wait and see, I guess, but they did what they had to to rid themselves of Cirillo, and melikes that. Melikes that alot.

I DIDN'T EVEN THINK IT WAS POSSIBLE! THANK YOU GOD! THANK YOU!!

          attack of the Graemlins!

Really nobody should be happy. If you Mariner fans are happy about Jarvis...then I feel bad for you.

At least the Padres got a player that is a once-was....instead of the trash we sent to the Seattle. A bunch of never-was and never-will-be players.

But it really comes down to swapping bad contracts.

Re: Padres and Mariners make a Trade (full list of players)

Thanks for spreading the hate, but I for one have actually seen most of these guys play. Jarvis is a good enough pitcher, and it's not his fault if the team around him isn't good enough to catch balls that need to be caught and such. Surrounded by the well rounded offense and defense in Seattle, he will either have insurmountable trouble (with the park being neither a pitcher's nor hitter's park) or slightly more success. Seeing what he has been capable of doing and able to do in San Diego, whether he got wins or not, has actually been entertaining for me. He gives up an average of 3-6 runs, depending on the support he gets from the rest of the team, and a great many other things. Sure, he's a 4 or 5 spotter, but he's not bad. With better run support in Seattle I tend to believe he'd fluorish in Wins if nothing else, but him being among the list of bottom-rung-kinda-okay-pitchers, I'd have to say he's one of the better pitchers on that list. Freddy Garcia might soon find himself on that list, though it would be taking a chance to trade him and keep Jarvis, it would be better to trade the guy (who could be flailing) while he's still worth something. It can't be an easy job deciding what to do now, but Cirillo is like an unpoppable tick that just keeps sucking the life force out of your team, slowly, with a look of bliss on his face. Enjoy his defense because he aint got much else!

Besides which, it wouldn't make sense at all for the Padres, looking to save money, to take on Cirillo's 6 mil contract. They are going to trade him, just wait and see. As for Jarvis, who has shown potential and has what it takes (don't spread your bull here, I had the guy on a league in Fantasy Baseball last year, resulting in a close eye on the guy most of the time) to get the job done, if the people around him do their jobs. I'm not saying San Diego is bad, but I'd have to be crazy to say they were good. They are Decent now, but at the start of last season they didn't look like much at all.

Personally I'd rather they trade both of them for a more trustworthy pitcher and a backup for left field, but somehow I see the chances of that happening as slim. In any case, this trade was smart for both teams, providing either talent or trade fodder for each, as each will probably be able to do alot more with them than they could on their original teams. All I'm saying is that taking on a guy I trust to some extent in Jarvis with a 4 mil contract, of course also paying the 1 mil for cirillo being involved, making it 5 mil...I'd rather pay 5 mil a year for Jarvis than 6 a year for Cirillo. I'd rather have an arm than nothing more than a blockade, and I do mean nothing more. Did you see where Jeff's bat went? I can't find it! I've looked all over the place and I just can't seem to locate it!

Pads'll prolly trade Cirillo for pitching, or something. The idea that he'll be traded is more of fact to me right now, because otherwise that trade would be kind of boneheadedby the Padres, because taking on a 6 mil contract regardless of whether he fills out a little, is NOT a cost cutting move. My bet is that they'll make room on their payroll through this trade to make a run at Maddux. If that happens I'll start raising my brows in the direction of San Diego, in more of a favoring view. I like all the moves they've made this off season, and this one just doesn't make sense unless Cirillo gets shipped again.

The M's could do pretty much anything with this, and I like that. More flexibility on the trade market is a nice thing to have right about now. Wel'' just have to wait and see, but I couldn't disagree more with the way you grade these players Triton.

Spin it whichever way you want, but Jarvis is horrible. And your own GM came out and said you guys saved no money on this deal and will continue to pay for most of Cirillo's contract.

One scrub festering on your roster is better than 3.
