I could be way wrong, but I took his question to mean players who finished second in their league. Although your way would work too, but I'm pretty sure Abreu wouldn't lead players who finished second in some years.

That is how I read it as well...basically the historical highest '2nd' total, if that makes sense. That's why I thought for sure it would be Giles...I remember his amazing totals and yet he was so distant to Bonds.

The question is worded pretty poorly if that's what it is looking for. For what you guys are saying, that doesn't qualify has having the most because someone else is ahead of them.

But in that regard, Giles' 135 in 2002 would only qualify for 44th most all time.

          You're still incorrect.

Can you elaborate on the question? I mean, that fits the exact definition of having the most without leading his league so you must be looking for something else.

Nope. That's precisely what I'm looking for and Abreu isn't the correct answer.

Let's give someone else a chance now and I'll give the answer tomorrow if nobody gets it.

Okay, since nobody got it, the correct answer is Eddie Joost. He walked a whopping 149 times in 1949 but didn't lead the league. The league leader that year? Ted Williams with 162 free passes.

I now defer to SPTO so he can ask his question...

Okay, so I was confused after your post yesterday. I had understood the question originally, but after yesterday thought you were looking for someone traded mid-season like his Abreu example. Oh well...after my Bonds/Giles guess I had thought of Williams next. Good question though!

I don't understand how it was so confusing though? I never mentioned anything about trades, etc.

I just read the question differently is why I didn't get it. Even looking at the list after Abreu was wrong, it didn't cross my mind. I read it as the most in a season, i.e. most in MLB, but without leading an individual league. Joost didn't qualify for either so didn't put 2 and 2 together. Abreu has the most of any player to do that.

No, I just misread your post to him yesterday when you said "that's precisely what I'm looking for". I thought you were telling him he was on the right track...after your post today I re-read it and realized I had been on the right track.

One of my favorite football players of all-time.

                            I don't have a question to ask, so I won't answer

I assume this doesn't mean at the MLB level...Charlie Hough was their opening day starter in 1993!

He didn't throw out their first pitch, though I see where the question makes you think that.
