A.J. Burnett, Marlins: Burnett made 4 starts before undergoing Tommy John surgery last april,
was expected to be out until at least june, but his recovery has been quick and steady, now it's possible Burnett could be on the Marlins opening day roster.
Jon Lieber, Yankees: Lieber's recovery from Tommy John surgery has not been as quick as Burnett's,
Lieber underwent the operation in august of 2002, made 1 minor league start last season, but is recovered and ready to go, is expected to be the Yankees no. 5 Starter.
Chris Carpenter, Cardinals: Carpenter pitched in 13 games for the Blue Jays in 2002 before having shoulder surgery, went to spring training with the Cardinals last season but did not pitch in the Major Leagues, did make 4 starts in the Minore, the Cardinals are looking at Carpenter as the no.3 man in the rotation.
Robert Person, White Sox: the White Sox found lightning in a bottle last season when they signed Esteban Loaiza to a minor league contract and invited him to spring training, Loaiza who himself was often injured and inconsistant went on to win 21 games for the ChiSox last season, the White Sox are hoping lightning strikes twice, this time with Robert Person, Person pitched in 7 games for the Red Sox last season, all in relief, even recording a Save, Person has had to battle injury's over the past two seasons, won 15 games for the Phillies in 2001, and comes to camp with a chance to be the White Sox 5th Starter,
they say lightning never strikes the same place twice, but you never know....
Jason Bere, Indians: Bere made 2 Starts for the Tribe last season before season ending surgery, Bere re-signed with Cleveland in november to a minor league contract, if healthy should have a decent shot at making the team as a Starter.
Unsigned Starters to watch:
Scott Erickson, missed 2 of the past 3 seasons with injury's, could be signed very soon.
Orlando Hernandez, missed all of last season after being traded to Montreal as part of a 3 team trade for Bartolo Colon, released by the Expos, may be returning to the Yankees.
Pedro Astacio, made 7 starts for the Mets before undergoing season-ending shoulder surgery, the Rockies have had some reported interest in bringing Astacio back, Astacio pitched for the Rockies from 1997-2001.
Brian Moehler, Moehler has been battling injury's for most of his career, was in the Astros rotation at the start of last season, but made only 3 Starts, there may be a possible return to the Tigers.
Todd Ritchie, Ritchie came out of nowhere to win 15 games for the Pirates in 1999, it's been down hill ever since, but is garnering interest from the Devil Ray's.
